This is definitely the top audio + video BluRay player on the market, consistently ranked very high for the past 4+ years without much similar competition. From a deals perspective, this is a great price because this usually doesn't dip below $350

haven't seen a "cheap" blu-ray drive in ages..idk if you've been looking, but (new) 5.25"/desktop externals and portable slim/ultra-slim externals are ~$90, 4tb external is cheap, maybe $80, i'll give you that. shield tv is $150. so, total's $150+90+80=$320. kind of a wash..

sure i guess you'd have the flexibility of your movies being technically portable (plugging in power and hdmi is surprisingly annoying if you have any cable management setup tho)..but the amount of time/effort to rip, even at full quality, for that potential flexibility? idk :shrug:

Mine also went out of stock while chatting with BB. They asked me a number of questions and had multiple minute delays between before they looked at the item to match. I guess the lesson is to leave BB out of it.

I first placed order online at best buy with 8% cash back then chatted to have order adjusted. They want first to place order through the chat but you will lose 8% cash back in that case. Glad it went through. With 8% cash back + 5% bb credit card reward this deal is unbeatable.

I would not say it is cheaper, if you want to keep the full rips of 4K movies (~50GB to 80GB per movie). The space adds up very quickly. I already have 15TB (4x16TB NAS in RAID-5) with BR and 4K movies and TV shows. For me personally, I preferred Nvidia Shield to this Panasonic 4K player, as it is very easy for me to scroll through my library to pick a movie/show to watch instead of going to my basement and selecting a disc, and putting in 4K player. I already have Sony X800 4K (non-DV) player. As usual, everyone's use case is different. Some prefer 4K player with discs and others like me prefer the ease of local streaming.

"Well actually"... If you just rip the 4k disk it will be the exact same quality. The problem is that's usually huge and completely unmanageable. So, most people will then compress it. Then its no longer the same quality.

I wish we can get the best of both worlds though. Have some sort of integration with libredrive and vlc/kodi/plex/jellyfin to play discs from a HTPC. That would be fun.

The UB820 price is outstanding. That said, I previously bought the 820K and was not pleased with the plastic build. Maybe I had a lemon, but my disc tray was excessively noisy and rattled while watching 4K movies to the point I couldn't stand it and returned it. Unfortunately, the more high quality 4K players (in terms of build construction) are well beyond this price point (such as the flagship UB9000 or the retired Oppo 203/205).
