Adding a NVME SSD is almost the first thing you need to do with this machine.

There's an empty M.2 slot, which can accept a 2280 form factor "gumstick" NVME SSD (but not a SATA M.2). Spend $40 more to get one & make it as the system drive. It will greatly improve the performance of this laptop.

The 1TB "old" HDD could be kept and used as media storage…

You don't need to. License is linked to bios. So just switch drive and reload windows.

Most laptops sadly come with low profile keyboards that hurt fingers when I press then. I hate those. Give me the full experience, I like it better. Companies nowadays make things to be fancy and not for utility or a good user experience and practicality.
I might have gotten this otherwise. Nice price. Backlit keyboard too and a large screen. Just add an SSD.

The one thing am not clear is, this eBay HP laptop comes with pre-installed Win 10 OS, how to reinstall the same OS in the new SSD? Do I need the Win 10 product key noted down from the Windows OS page before doing this upgrade? Or, does the key automatically stored in BIOS? How to do this reinstall OS step? Any step-by-step tutorial?
Most SSDs come with drive cloning software (download from their website) or you could use a free one like Macrium Reflect. The software is pretty straight-forward.

Never heard of "TeamGroup" drives, how reliable are they?
They are a Taiwanese group company specializes with memory, hhd and ssd. I've used one of their SSD 2.5 with my 2nd rig last 2019 and still looking good til this day.

Hello, can you tell which SSD did you put in? Is it SATA M2 SSD (or) NVMe M2 SSD? Any idea what type does it support and what max capacity, say 2 TB SSD?
I put in a Samsung Evo 860 1TB. It's a SATA 3 drive. At the time, NVME was too expensive.

how to transfer windows' license into a new ssd drive?
You can use Macrium software to clone the drive on the SSD then swap. The software is free. Works great Smilie

This HP laptop only accepts NVME M2 SSD, but not a SATA M2 SSD. The max. capacity is 2TB, but IMO 256GB/512GB should be enough if the original 1TB HDD is retained as a secondary storage.

Figure between the ssd and adding more ram that's easily another $50-100.

Still tempted, but barely use the current laptop (2010 i5 2540m based asus w/8gb). Mostly when traveling, which doesn't happen often anymore.
12GB is pretty good for most users. NVMe is a must.

I'm also a little concerned about the keyboard
You can choose the 15 inch one if you have a 4K monitor or if you want the touch screen.

I can see the advantage of employing the NVMe slot (and I intend to), but what could possibly be an issue with just replacing the 1TB spinner with any decent 2.5" SATA SSD?

It depends whether you could make good use of the 1TB spinner somewhere else, otherwise it would be a waste.

Also, NVMe SSD is generally faster than a SATA SSD 2.5", so you will possibly regret sometime later for not spending a little bit more for better performance.

But of coz, if you already have a spare SATA 2.5" in hands, it's good to have a try. It will probably use less power instead of spinner+NVMe.

All very good points. My intention is to use the NVMe slot for win10, and replace the HDD with a decent 1TB SSD from the parts box, and "hope" to find another SATA connection for yet a 3rd SSD (being many of this model come with a CD/DVD drive and there is a chance the connector is inside). Fingers crossed on the last thing though - lol!

Edit: my preferred layout is separate physical drives to boot either win10 or Linux, with yet a 3rd physical disk for "common" and/or shared stuff. It's been working well for me since the Lenovo e570 deal about 5 years ago Wink

That E570 is still going strong almost six years later! I'm debating grabbing this in case my wife's HP sh*ts the bed again. For some reason she likes the feel of HP laptop over Dell.
