Adding a NVME SSD is almost the first thing you need to do with this machine.

There's an empty M.2 slot, which can accept a 2280 form factor "gumstick" NVME SSD (but not a SATA M.2). Spend $40 more to get one & make it as the system drive. It will greatly improve the performance of this laptop.

The 1TB "old" HDD could be kept and used as media storage…

You don't need to. License is linked to bios. So just switch drive and reload windows.

So why do _you_ think they have so many of these available?
This laptop was not made for retail sale. The spotty documentation and driver info from HP normally means that it was made for a government or large corporate client whose needs changed and the contract was cancelled or cut short. HP made the laptops in one run to cover the contract but when that didn't pan out they had to dump the leftovers in the retail channels. That's why you have a relatively new CPU in a, "refurb" until. The mechanical hard drive says the laptop was spec'd to a price point, not to serve a market niche or compete against a specific product.

The value proposition for this laptop is the 17" display PERIOD. I immediately dumped an extra $260 in parts into this laptop to make it usable for my needs. This is a bargain because a 17" laptop generally comes with a $1,200+ price tag and it won't include the 1TB ssd or the 64gb or ram I put into this one.

Has anyone had issues with wifi speed while using Bluetooth at the same time?

The unit I received appears brand new, did a clean install of windows 11 and updated drivers through windows update. After noticing the skipping audio and YouTube videos I updated wifi drivers from hp site but the problem is still there.

This along with the uncertainty regarding how ssd upgrades will affect the warranty are making me debate if I should just return it. I'd really appreciate any advice or clarification from the sd community. Thanks in advance.

I received the laptop - popped it open - replaced the spinner with an NVMe drive listed early in this thread. The fresh install of Windows 11 seemed like a good idea although I did need the intel driver to install to NVMe and then for the longest time Windows 11 would not properly activate the touchpad. When that was finally working I closed the case.

Thanks to all who posted!

The wireless connectivity for this unit isn't the greatest. Looks like building to a price point, aka "let's blow out the oldest, least powerful hardware we have in the warehouse to keep the costs down on this unit". The single antenna and older 4.2 bluetooth spec aren't ideal.

If you want the 17" display your best bet is to upgrade to the Costco version [costco.com]. It offers a better wireless package (2 antennas, Bluetooth 5) and a pre-installed 512GB PCIe® NVMe™ M.2 Solid State Drive so you don't have to void the warranty on this one to get around the mechanical hard drive. The trade off is that it costs an extra $150.

Can anyone who got this speak to the backlight/keyboard contrast? I want to get this for my dad, but he's complained about the white on silver keys on my mom's laptop being hard to see and I expect this might be similar...

Thanks for suggesting the costco alternative. Being a non-member I'd have to pay around $550. Wish the Groupon deal for gold membership was still available. Anyways it does have all the specs that matter to me so maybe I'll still go for it if my troubleshooting attempts fail lol.

You could always buy laptop keyboard stickers. You can even get some with a bigger font

Reporting 6hr battery life with screen on bright, keyboard backlight on, and ssd swap. Not bad.

Don't see mention of Thunderbolt. Assuming no docking station-like capability?
I was not able to connect to a docking station via USB-C. I was only able to connect via USB-A, which is annoying, since I wanted to power the laptop via the docking station. However, HP customer support purports that docking station via USB-C is possible.

If anyone is interested in turning this laptop to the dark side - some of the old timers still call it, "installing Linux" - Here are my notes on the struggles and how to overcome them:

Out of the box the touch pad and wi-fi didn't work at all. On power up the system would notify me with a dialog box that the Intel Iris Xe Graphics needed a driver but the driver manager didn't have one. Bluetooth would pair briefly (but only for file transfers) then lose interest and disconnect. Some of my favorite apps would run, just in slow motion taking minutes to accomplish tasks that should have been finished in seconds. This was especially confusing since I upgraded the ram to the max of 64GB.

I started with the touch pad. it's a Synaptics Precision Touch Pad, but my flavor of linux installed the libinput drivers instead. Even after I installed the Synaptics drivers, the system ignored them and kept using the libinput drivers. Frustrated, I moved on to the graphics card.

I found a post that explained the issue had been resolved with kernel 5.8 - the graphics drivers I needed were included with the kernel from 5.8 going forward. My laptop had been using an older LTS kernel. Getting the newest 5.15 kernel fixed the graphics, the touch pad and the snail's pace issue my apps were having. The system had already been updated and upgraded but the kernel has to be updated in a separate process.

Encouraged by my success, I moved on to the wi-fi. The Realtek8821ce driver had been installed correctly, but there was no wi-fi. There was no mention of a wireless option in my network settings and no way to add a wireless network connection. After researching the issue I found that the secure boot enabled by default in BIOS (needed for Windows NOT for Linux) interfered with third-party drivers. Disabling the secure boot option in BIOS fixed the wi-fi and the bluetooth!

If you're planning on running Linux update your kernel to the newest one you can live with and disable the secure boot in BIOS. That will fix everything! Should only take a few minutes, but I spent my Saturday afternoon figuring this out to save other folks some grief.

Got this laptop yesterday and replaced a nvme ssd(3000 Mbps read) and fresh install win 11 from USB after loading drivers for ssd. It works awesome except keyboard. Hard to read the letter s in the silver keyboard for elders or low vision audience.

I just got my laptop today. Sometimes the screen would freeze on me for like 1-2 seconds. For example when I scroll through comments on slickdeals with the scroll bar, the screen would freeze for a few seconds. Is this happening to anyone else?

EDIT: Nevermind, windows was probably updating some drivers when it was lagging. The issue is now gone.

A 17" laptop does not cost $1200+... As others have referenced, there is one at Costco for $500 and a couple at Staples for $529.
