Don't listen to this person... at all. Utter nonsense.
FYI amazon.co.jp now can ship to US. the JPY currency is very attempting.

For example this is tiger brand IH rice cook, including shipping as 24000 JPY as $177
https://www.amazon.co.jp/Thermos-...08B1HRQHR/

Similarly priced at 300 at Amazon US. https://www.amazon.com/TIGER-cook...016BH7KHG/

You can find all best rice cooker from Tiger/zojirushi/Panasonic/Toshiba, 100% made in Japan. Amazon JP can search English without pain.
I bought mine from Amazon JP 8 years ago, working perfectly with US 110V-120V, cooking daily with all kinds of ingredients, no problem at all.

update:
My bad, I forgot to mention one thing: all are made in Japan, including manuals and operation panel labels. NO English. But Google translate is always helpful. Bottom line, similar models for US market are designed same so their manuals will work too.
I regret buying the Tiger rice cooker. I bought this 2 years ago to replace my 8 year old Panasonic rice cooker due to scratched inner pot.
1. The rice cooker can only save one timer, while my older one supports 2 timers. This is a big hassle for me.
2. It can never cook the brown rice right. It is always too soggy for my taste and it takes over an hour and half to cook brown rice.
3. The results of cooking short grain white rice is also disappointing. I typically have to go with a bit smaller amount of water than suggested, otherwise the cooked rice is bit stickier.
4. The inner pot is noticeable lighter compared to Panasonic one, which I suspect to result poor cooking results.

If you are picky about rice, I would not recommend the Tiger one.

but if I made decent rice on the stovetop already, is there any benefit to this? Just that it makes perfect rice every time and has a timer?

Yes, basically the 2 main features of having a rice cooker are 1) foolproof/low maintenance rice every time and 2) being able to keep warm rice on demand all day (if you eat rice for more than one meal, cook one big pot in the morning and keep it on warm for hot rice for dinner)

I added it to cart, but it still showed the full price of $99. Do I need a coupon code, or is it dead?

$80 rice cooker lolol. Do you not own a pot, microwave, pressure cooker etc?

I wasn't a believer either. This Tiger rice cooker makes the best and most perfect rice each and every time. Sure, I could save $80 but if one can afford this luxury....it is definitely worth every penny.

Different sized pans does play into it. I remember reading someone that experimented with their rice cookers, instapot, and stove methods, and found that the amount of water sitting on top of the rice played a large factor on adjusting the ratio.

Basically, an instapot with a really tight seal didn't need as much water as the stove top which had a much looser seal releasing the steam easier.

This is JBV-A10U, which doesn't have timer/porridge function, it's also not [amazon.com]made in Japan FWIW. OP's model(JBV-S10U) has all these features and is made in japan. IMO at this price($79.99) this rice cooker is hard to beat - rice cookers from zojirushi or other famous Asian competitors typically charges for $90~$200 if you want all of the functionalities(steam, porridge, rice, timer etc).
for example

Zojirushi NS-TSC10 5-1/2-Cup (Uncooked) Micom Rice Cooker and Warmer, 1.0-Liter https://a.co/d/ge5cCBY
timer, porridge, steam, rice, $180

Zojirushi NS-LGC05XB Micom Rice Cooker & Warmer, 3-Cups (uncooked), Stainless Black https://a.co/d/aUihoqu
no steam, $150

CUCKOO CR-0675F | 6-Cup (Uncooked) Micom Rice Cooker | 13 Menu Options: Quinoa, Oatmeal, Brown Rice & More, Touch-Screen, Nonstick Inner Pot | White https://a.co/d/7k13Ooc
no steam, $95

Toshiba Digital Programmable Rice Cooker, Steamer & Warmer, 3 Cups Uncooked Rice with Fuzzy Logic and One-Touch Cooking, 24 Hour Delay Timer and Auto Keep Warm Feature, White https://a.co/d/beM0pto
no steam, $85

Zojirushi NS-RPC10FJ Rice Cooker and Warmer, 5.5-Cup (Uncooked), Tulip https://a.co/d/i0r2t8u
just rice, no timer/porridge/steam, $110

Panasonic 10 Cup (Uncooked) Rice Cooker with Fuzzy Logic and One-Touch Cooking for Brown Rice, White Rice, and Porridge or Soup – 1.8 Liter – SR-DF181 (White) https://a.co/d/7aLnMHk
no timer/steam, $90

I only trust these famous Asian brands that are known to cook delicious rice. If you really want all these functionalities and is not so picky about the deliciousness of the rice, Aroma is the way to go. If you worry about TPFE on the inner coat, choose some rice cooker with ceramic inner pot. Otherwise, go with this tiger rice cooker. It cooks rice as delicious as some cheaply-made(but is priced for $$$) IH rice cookers if you are just cooking for a few cups. If I really have to complain something about it, then it's that you cannot detach the top lid which makes it a little bit hard to clean.

Do you have a recommendation for ones with ceramic pots? I already have enough plastic in my body and should probably cut down.

The one I bought from Costco is made in China, which maybe a slightly different model number than this one. Though, the price point is similar and with similar fictions and capacity. Hopefully, this version improves. I still would not set the expectations too high.
That is the main difference. The model that made in China is inferior to this. I would not purchase it at this price.

How does this compare to zojirushi? I got one of those for my parents, but maybe don't want to spend that much for myself. This is like half the price.
Zojirishi is very good but much more expensive that this. I would say the made in Japan Tiger would be the next best. Cuckoo has a lot of models and the quality varies a lot.

Can anyone answer me this? Have never owned a rice cooker, if I'm happy with making my stovetop rice in 20 mins, any reason for me to get one? Is the main benefit set it and forget it?
It depends on your requirement for the quality and texture of rice. I have cooked rice on fire wood during camping many times. I also cooked rice with a simple pot on stove for a couple years when I was in grad school. I also cook rice frequently in a clay pot for special Cantonese cuisine. I have also owned/used more than dozen rice cookers from different brands. A good rice cooker can make rice in good texture consistently and is durable. Most cheap brands can cook edible rice better than using fire wood.

There are rice cookers that cost hundreds dollars too. Just like there are fast food and 5-star restaurants. The question is what do you want.

Damn same question. Tiger, you can take out the inner lid to wash but the cuckoo can not.

Just received the Tiger and lid definitely does not come off

So I had clicked the link to the Japanese Amazon rice cooker that was posted above and it changed my app to Amazon JP. I left it like that and then a few days later I changed it back to USA and put in order, and it had given me a $15 new app sign-in credit. A big ymmv but thought I'd share. It didn't show up until I went to check out. I did not uninstall or reinstall the app or anything, on Android.

got one in costco store last week, thinking about returning. The top lid is not removable and hard to clean, the rice quality is just a little better than my instant pot. not impressed.
