I can say the same about getting muddy in the rain:
DO NOT BUY THESE TYPES OF CLOTHING
Rain boots are scams. You do not need rain boots. This is purely Fear mongering type crap. Not getting your feet wet and such is pretty easy now adays, especially if you are avoiding the wet and muddy areas where they tend to be.
My hubby works in IT. He says:
Deployed bitdefender on thousands of machines. It sucks.
Eset is supposed to be pretty good, but the "gaming" part sounds gimmicky.
In the industry, he uses Sentinel One which he doesn't think is a consumer grade product and MalwareBytes for consumer machines.
His thoughts for you.

Windows defender has improved a lot but it's not as good as the others. Most people will find a lot of malware and trojans after installing a dedicated AV. Windows defender is below the industry average for virus detection.

I don't think they're a "scam", they do the job they advertise to do. Just no need to spend money on them.
Given that my (major organization) employer pays for internet security software, I'm going assume their IT folks are more knowledgeable than the posters above who claim it's a scam.

Recently found out that Microsoft Defender (not to be confused with Windows Defender), is now included with a Microsoft 365 subscription. It is the rebranded former Microsoft Enterprise Security Solutions package that was previously only available for business accounts. It is available for multi devices, including an app for cell phones.

Bit-defender includes protection for my other devices, it also has child protection features.

I don't catch viruses unless I download some crap, spammy software but certain websites have exploits they haven't fixed yet.
I think rawstory or one of those blogs have some bad pops that happen once you go there.
