Alright so theres 2 revisions of this router.

The original ones were intel Lantiq, but that platform is dead/unsupported as intel sold off their router hardware division (they still make client chips). Only other manufacturer to use it was TPLINK.

The second gen V2 is the typical BCM6750 + BCM43684 in 5G disabled down to 2x2 mode. (Only way its getting 160mhz support on a 2x2, well besides LantiQ) This platform is identical to routers like the AX58U/GS-AX3000 etc.

If you get a v2, I can't really fault it at $50 bucks. Yeah its only 2x2, but its 1/3 the cost of anything remotely decent on sale in terms of "good" AX hardware. It's not going to beat top end AC or AX routers with 4x4 Radios, but, again, its 50 bucks..

If you happen to get a v1, just return it.. my 2c.

Edit: RAX40 is the main platform and RAX35 is the Walmart specific model without a USB port to clarify. Both were updated to BCM hardware somewhere around Q4 2020/Q1 2021.

I had this. Horrible router. The WiFi drops all the time. Search Google "nighthawk rax35 dropping wifi" and you'll see a bunch of other people having the same issue as I did. And every time Netgear releases a new firmware for this piece of crud, they break something else. I've learned to stay away from routers with BC and Intel chips and look for Qualcomm or Atheros.

Broadcom + AX = No DD-WRT

https://dd-wrt.com/support/other-...-r49467%2F

Also you might want to start swaying away from DD-WRT as their development is getting smaller and smaller each month. If you still want to use WiFi 5, DD-WRT is great. Once you get into WiFi 6, you're going to be very limited on options. Most DD-WRT WiFi 6 support is still very buggy and very beta.

I bought this about a year ago. It works fine most of the time. I have to restart it sometimes but I also fear that mostly has to do with my dirt cheap Roku TV's hardware being underpowered. Less issues with the latest firmware, and only needs a restart from the mobile app about once a week.

Wired gaming has been perfect on this device.

This is the TP Link AX1800 (Archer AX21) [amazon.com] I'd been considering, it went down another $10 today to $69.99. Would this be a good option to update a 7-year-old TP Link AC 1900 (Archer C9)?

It really seems the router manufactures are jumping on board the non-opensource bandwagon. Broadcom first started not working with the open source community and now everyone is primarily buying Broadcom chips for their routers. Even though they (like Netgear) claim they support opensource, they work very little with the opensource developers. It's really baffling because companies like Netgear will stop providing updates for their firmware while the opensource versions keep getting updated. Just another reason to force people to go out and buy a new router.
This is why the Linksys WRT1900AC for around $40 on eBay is a great deal. It has great support for OpenWRT ... rock solid. Gave one to my GF, my Parents, my GF's sister and I used one from when it first came out until 6 months ago when I switched to PF sense, it was still working just great though. It's AC, but just plug an Access point into it.

NEVER again. Signal drops once a week. There's better options that are available.

I got two of these (RAX35v2) on clearance forever ago. Regret my purchase big time, and pulled them out of service. If anyone wants a unit or two for cheap, ping me. Just isn't up to my standards - even serving as just an access point.

The only one I would suggest from personal experience is RAX120 v2. It doesnt have the range/speeds as other WiFi 6 routers, but I've seen and had very little problems with them. I believe I read somewhere that Xiaomi makes these for Netgear.Whaw
RAX120 is 8x8 QCA platform with teamed 4x4 radios. It actually better for range than most 4x4 stuff/tri-band with a higher rated marketing number. The platform isn't widely used due to cost.

The only reason it isn't rated for AX11000 is because the teamed radios don't support 160mhz mode and will disable one of the teamed radios (down to 4x4) if you use 160mhz completely nullifying the benefits of the QCA 8x8 teamed design.

And those are made by DELTA for Netgear. The Broadcom stuff is foxconn.

Any issues you're having with the RAX40 v2 are firmware based. ASUS variations are pretty solid with the same HW setup. People like to blame broadcom, but Id rather shift blame to rushed firmware/SW.

Do you guys think this is better than Netgear WAX202? Got that for $30 last month from Amazon. Got a couple weeks to return that.

Looking for a reliable wifi router that comes with no extra cost parental controls like url filtering, profiles, etc., trying to keep my 8 and 9 year old away from all the internet trash… any suggestions?

Thanks for pointing this one out. Just ordered; I've also been using the C9 for 7 years.

So we're in the same boat! I'm still looking & comparing a few routers; the C9 works fine, but I'm not getting my full inet speed with it and am curious to see the difference I'd get with a newer one. Hope you like it!

This was the most disappointing router I've ever owned, not worth is for any amount of money. Internet would stop working like every 12 hours or so. I stopped buy Netgear branded things after my experience with this router, not to say anything bad about their other routers, but this one killed any chance I'll spend any money on their products. Range was pretty bad too.

I know I'm generalizing this but based on my experience Netgear routers used to be top notch back in the day but recently I've purchased and returned THREE different models and variations including nighthawk. All three had major issues dropping, link speeds, and channel switching. Tried ASUS, much better, but ended up with Linksys which has always been reliable. Like a Sony TV, National VCR, Toyota Corolla, Phillips Bulb, Duracell Battery. LOL.
