This is hard to resist. I have been contemplating building a TrueNAS Scale to replace my TrueNAS Core with four 4TB red drives. That system has been running 24x7 for almost 10 years.

Not a panacea. But definitely better than RAID5. Statistically, what I've read is that once you get up to 8TB drives, in the time it would take you to rebuild a RAID5 from parity you'd more than likely hit another unrecoverable read error and you'd lose the array.

With RAID6 you can lose 2 drives and still be OK, so the problem isn't as bad, but rebuilding from parity is REALLY slow. And, in a typical 4 bay NAS, you'd lose 1/2 your capacity to parity leaving you with 16TB of usable space. So, what I did instead is RAID10. Still lose 1/2 my capacity and I can definitely lose 1 drive and be OK. 2 if it was just the right drives. But rebuild speeds are much faster since it is a copy instead of parity.

But on this deal - strongly considering getting one so I have a cold spare for if/when one of my white label, shucked WDs goes bad.
