Had good luck for years and flashed Asus Merlin os. Super stable and plenty of updates
All the other Asus routers work perfectly. I'm no amateur. It seems to be an issue with the ROG routers.
That's weird. I'm looking to buy the ax11000 next times it's on sale as main router and 2 other access points
I'm looking at the below. Isn't wifi 6 the newest or wait for 6e?
ASUS ROG Rapture WiFi 6 Gaming Router (GT-AX11000)
ASUS ROG Rapture WiFi 6 Gaming Router (GT-AX11000)
Yeah that has first gen AX radios/cpu. It's good but the second gen stuff has improved throughput and packet processing. Current gen2 BCM AX router is the GT-AX6000. GT-AX11000 PRO and XT12 mesh also share newer hardware.
6E is pointless unless clients ramp up heavy. Standard WIFI6 isn't even heavily supported in the world of IoT.
I have a AXE11000 (was a sample) but its gen 1 radios. Gen 1 and gen 2 both support wifi 6E. It's just an extension more than a dedicated radio if that makes sense.
This GT-AC2900 ironically does better than the AXE11000 (in my environment) on unii3 channels. Just the nature of some wifi hardware.

Gotcha. I'm using 3 rt-AC68u running Merlin os. Looking at replacing main unit with quad core wifi 6 router that supports Merlin
These have the exact same hardware as the AC86U, though, right? I would assume flashing them with Merlin would make them identical routers and it should work fine, right? When did you have them? Maybe you had an early firmware that had bugs?
Does AiMesh work well on *any* ASUS devices?

No, this was a few months ago, May of 2022. I was on the phone with Asus tech support for hours. Current firmware at the time, and I even tried Merlin. Everything failed, and they didn't have answers. At the time I was testing, I had two of these routers, two AC1900Ps, and an AX58U all side-by-side. Everything could connect to each other both as a router and a node with the exception of both AC2900s not capable of being routers for any of the three models present. See my review on Amazon with one star for more details. It's titled "Confirmed AiMesh Incompatibility - x3!" The review date was March 15, 2022.
Yes, it absolutely is amazing on the other routers. I've used many, and the only ones I had issues with were the ROG routers. That said it is not all of the ROG routers that have issues. I am currently using two GS-AX3000 routers in AiMesh mode and they have worked without a single hiccup since that fiasco I had with the others in May. You'll know if it doesn't work as soon as you open it and set it up. Cannot recommend AiMesh enough. Plus their setup is almost idiot-proof. In my case, I'm using AiMesh to wirelessly send a signal to a cement block garage 100ft away from my auxiliary house router. No signal of any kind likes to go through those walls and most consumer routers don't like distance. But the GS-AX3000s get full signal and full speed out there. It's as if I have my fiber line out there as well. Can't tell any difference.
I've had four AC86Us up and running with three as AIMesh nodes for over three years. Two level home, 3200 sq ft, several wireless switches and IoT devices running. So I have to say yes, ASUS AIMesh works.
I think its a firmware issue since this model supports 160mhz. Regular AC86U does not.
