Usually, things become a cliche for a reason. Jumping on the "gaming chairs suck" bandwagon became cliche because the most popular models (and their low-rent imitators) are modeled after racing seats with flat bottoms, constrictive bolsters, lever-action recline, and tacked-on armrests. Many of the "features" are only of benefit when you're in a vehicle at high speed and none are properties that are conducive to ergonomics for extended tasking at a desk. They're modeled after a seat designed for a completely different purpose. They lack basic the most basic ergonomic shape and rely on velcro head/lumbar pillows that don't stay put even before they start to sag completely They became popular and the trend is continuing to be milked for all it's worth. People say "gaming chairs suck" because most do. There are exceptions (the rebranded Logitech x HM Embody comes to mind) but they're pricey and far from the norm. Even most "high-end" gaming chairs (I'm thinking Secret Labs) still come with the baggage of the racing seat design and its negative impact on tasking ergonomics.

Chairs like this that hover in the $100-150 range are actually a far better alternative to "better" gaming chairs in many ways. These are really just low-end office chairs with a bit of gamer/racing flair splashed on and eschew most of the negatives of a racing-style seat. if $100 is all you can spend on a chair and you're after this aesthetic, you can do far worse. That says nothing of their build-quality or how they'll wear over time (it's a $100 bonded-leather office chair, you know what to expect), but if I were looking for this particular aesthetic, I'd take one of these over a true "gaming chair" in the $250-300 range since, at the end of the day, you're getting an office chair that just happens to look like a "gaming chair"... and that's better than an actual "gaming chair". My kids use a similar $100 gamer-ish office chair for their PC ($90-130 from Staples depending on sales, I got it for $30 from FBM) and it's perfect for that use case...

Also, the "mythical expensive-chair-on-craigslist" shouldn't be discounted (no pun intended). Again, things become a cliche for a reason. HM, Steel Case, Haworth, etc. chairs are built to last and designed for ergonomic tasking. Should everyone run out and spend $4-500 on a used Aeron based on a 2020 WFH trend? No. But that doesn't mean they're not great chairs. You're right that people should spend time in a chair before they buy it... sit in it, move in it, dial in all the adjustments the best you can and see if it's a good fit. But also don't be unreasonable and think that trying out 5 or 6 $100-200 chairs at Staples means you're going to find the best fit for you or that it will last. You can buy a $100 Staples chair every 2-3 years, or you can buy a used Steelcase/Haworth/Herman Miller for $100-500 that will last for 10-20 years and be much easier on your back and bottom.

When people ask me if they should buy an Aeron, I always ask if they've tried (or even heard of) anything from Steelcase, Haworth, or even other HM chairs (the Mira is a great chair that gets far less attention)... if they look at me sideways, I know they haven't really done much research and they're just repeating something they read online. Then I tell them to, at minimum, test a Steelcase Leap v2 and/or Amia, an Aeron and/or Mira, and go with the one that they were able to make the most comfortable after completely adjusting it. If they can't find anything locally, aren't comfortable buying used, or can't spend more than ~$200... then I just point them towards the ~$200 Clatina Mellet (a Leap v2 knockoff available in both mesh and fabric back and also available with or without headrest) and they're almost always happy.

And if you're relying on donut cushions to make the whole world more comfortable, you may want to see an orthopedist and/or chiropractor.

What makes a chair a "gaming" chair? Aren't good office chairs more ergonomically correct?

Also, it helps to just walk into a store like Staples or somewhere with a lot of chairs and just sit down. Forget what others are saying, just give some a go and decide yourself. Me and my friends mostly hate each others chairs. One has the expensive $300 racer one and swears by it but I hate it, and its not to save face because they spend stupid money regularly. I like a good mesh chair with some lean. I sat in one racing style chair I did like, this was at Microcenter, it was a cheapo that would surely look funny in a year with cracked fake leather but it felt comfy. Trying is best imo, then you can really see the differences.

All chairs feel comfy the first few months, then cushions will start to deflate. The conmfyness feels just like new pillows after a few weeks.

"Gaming" chairs are the worst. Especially Secret Labs chairs. I haven't tried this brand, but I'd imagine it's just as bad. I guess it's more important to nerds to have a chair that looks like it came out of a race car, than it is to have a well-functioning back when they're 40.

Additionally, comfort for long periods is critical. testing a chair at staples for half an hour will not give you the information you need.

This doesn't appear to be a good deal. Walmart has an even better chair available for $10 less:

Made of bonded leather. This will start peeling and cracking within 2 years -probably less. Not to mention reviewers complaining of qc issues, missing pieces and getting used chairs.

I have a Secret Lab chair and I think it's fantastic. I've streamed in mine for hours and I feel fantastic afterwards vs. my office chair that hurts my back within an hour or two.
