is it really a downgrade? I'm coming for an unlocked 4a 5g as well, on the vzw network. would going to the 6a be a step down in terms of connectivity, or did I also already lose the mmWave 5g by going w the unlocked version on the 4a5g?
It's not a downgrade. That person was wrong. The 4a 5g never had mmWave. You'll get the same experience here with the 6a, unless you go with the Verizon version which apparently costs $50 more and includes mmWave.

*edit, I guess Verizon did offer an mmWave version of the 4a 5g as well and that was $100 more than the standard price.

The modem on the 6a is the same turd as on 6 and 6 Pro so expect sub-par performance.

Value of this phone is gonna fall so fast. 2nd hand market will be flooded with people taking advantage of the trade in deal. You'll probably be able to find one locally or on swappa for $300 brand new

Trade in is great for this phone. Google is giving $300 for a pixel 3 or 4.
Got a pixel 3a off eBay for $40, far superior deal to grab one that powers on for less than $100 on ebay and use the trade in ability via Google store for a more substantial savings plus free buds

Interesting. I'm upgrading from a 4a 5g to the 6a so it'll be a downgrade in connectivity. Bummer.
What was your reasoning for upgrading ? I have a 4a 5G as well. It's the perfect phone imo. Aux port, good display/display size. Fingerprint that works flawlessly. Plus unlimited photo storage(compressed) , and we'll get Android 14 guaranteed

Mostly the battery is starting to fail and my volume up button doesn't click anymore but still works. It's sluggish too but a reset would probably fix that.

not full 5g

For pretty much 99% of the population the unlocked Pixel 6A has the only 5G bands that matter.

Mmwave is a fixed wireless source so it basically works best when having direct line of sight so concerts and stadiums. If you live in a very dense city you might have some more opportunities to use it when you're traveling around very specific parts the city possibly (like a major shopping center such as a mall). Overall it's definitely not worth it for probably 99% of people imo -- meaning unless you live in a dense city that has mmwave deployed you should be getting the carrier unlocked version. Even then it probably isn't worth it given how small the coverage/availability for mmwave is due to limited deployment and how the technology works (it's a fixed wireless source needing direct line of sight to work best). You'll be able to get 5G via the ongoing C-band deployments which is what the majority of people will be connecting to for 5G due to it's much higher coverage and availability which the unlocked Pixel 6A supports.

"The mmWave spectrum covers small areas within cities whereas the C-band provides much better coverage pretty much everywhere else."

Even Apple removed support for mmwave with the iPhone SE. The below Verge article from May 2022 is really good about how limited use the mmwave network is so not having it on your phone is no loss hence even iPhone SE removed support for the band. The only 5G that matters is C-band which the unlocked 6A supports and what most people will connect to almost 100% of the time. The author only connected to mmwave once ever in all the time he had his phone!

Article: 5G's false start is over and the iPhone SE proves it. Apple built an iPhone without millimeter wave, and it matters

They've made several improvements on the software end for the modem over the current year so it's pretty decent and based off the 6A reviews I didn't see people complaining about connectivity (but definitely the Qualcomm modems are better). They also have a lot of good quality of life improvements coming in Android 13 which will be released either in August or September. The improvements are for the modem, thermals, overall smoothness, battery usage, etc. I provided links in the other Pixel thread here regarding those improvements per different Reddit threads where they are testing the current Android 13 beta 4. It has QOL improvements across the board going back to the Pixel 4. But I'm definitely interested in how the additional modem improvements pan out.

Interesting theory. You think many people will trade in their Pixels 3a to get the 6a for $150 and then resell it? Makes sense if those people have 3a lying around, in addition to another phone they're daily driving.

These people are buying up the cheap 3as as trade-ins to profit by reselling the 6a and buds. Easy $150-$200 profit if they sell the phone at $300 and the buds for $50. Guarantee you will see a ton of these 6as for sale

I'm coming from the unlocked 4a5G and went to a 6 Pro. Overall no issues with connectivity (use US Mobile without mmWave plan).

The unlocked 4a5G didn't have mmWave support anyways, and you could look up online where Verizon claims to support ultra wideband support. Even then, I'd be skeptical of that specific type of coverage pending towers, obstructions, and your need for those speeds (versus simply using WiFi, etc).

There are other things the 6a is a step down from the 6 and 6 Pro, but I wouldn't stress about the 5G version IMHO.

thank you for adding insight, inl appreciate it! on your 6 Pro, did Google break out the ring volume and notifications volume, or are they still stuck together? it's a pretty annoying config on the 4a5g that I wasn't expecting, coming from the og pixel xl before

It's the same as the 4a5G: button to cycle between silent, vibrate, and ring, and a slider for notifications volume. Looks like call and notification volumes are linked.

I bet there's an app to customize it more, but doesn't like that's all option in the base settings of Android.

Do not disturb is nice and highly customizable. You can have it only notify on calls and silence everything else. Or choose what apps you want notifications from as well while in DnD.
https://support.google.com/androi...t-to-block

I'm sure there's plenty of other ways you can customize notifications as well though. In general I always have my sound/ringer off. And I've silenced most app notifications in general. If I'm expecting important calls I just toggle DnD on.
