This or Lenovo Legion 3 (https://slickdeals.net/share/android_app/t/15946321)? Can anyone please tell me any big difference? Also, which one has better cooling/airflow/thermals, and noise?

Walmart states it as 90WHr for this exact model.

NO. This is mainly directed toward gamers. It has poor display (color accuracy), bit heavy. You should be looking for a deal on something like LG Gram 16.

The screen is pretty trash. You'd better see it in person before purchase.

In general, most CS programs are not going to have really high technology needs on the laptops for students. If they are working with big data the processing with probably take place on a main frame. If they are taking programming classes they will be writing the programs so that don't need high specs. I looked up a few University websites and grabbed the most prestigious ones.

Incoming first-year IST students enrolling in the College of IST at University Park in summer 2022 or later must have a laptop that meets or exceeds the following specifications:

Windows Laptop
Minimum Specifications: Windows 10, i7 processor, 16GB RAM, 256GB hard drive, WiFi, Bluetooth, Hardware service warranty
Recommended Specifications: Windows 11, Intel i7 or equivalent AMD Ryzen processor, 16GB RAM, 256GB hard drive, WiFi, Bluetooth, Hardware service warranty

https://ist.psu.edu/current/under...equirement

IST stands for Information Sciences and Technology. These specs are useless for the processor because it does not specify which generation of processor.

Looking at Cornell there computer recommendations are very modest. The CS program states they will not make a recommendation but you can check out the Management Schools requirements for guidance. The Management School is a Graduate program that recommends:
Personal Laptop
  • You must have a laptop that is less than two years old.
  • It should have a minimum 8GB of RAM and at least an Intel i5 processor.
  • Choose a Solid-State Drive (SSD) instead of a traditional hard drive.
  • Ensure that it has wireless capability of 802.11 b/g/n.
https://www.johnson.cornell.edu/n...checklist/

Assuming you want the computer to last at least 4 years, I would favor:
  • 16 GB of RAM. More is better but 16 should be fine for most people.
  • The SSD is a must. At least 256GB, 512GB would be my preference and a TB would be great as well. But, 256GB should work OK for most people.
  • 802.11ax (WiFi 6) over 802.11ac if the price difference is not too much. There are not many access points that support WiFi 6 yet so not a big deal but I have noticed it being an option on more deals recently.
  • A nice keyboard because they have to type a lot to write the programs. (Until they discover Stack Overflow EEK!)
There are other items that are personal preference and depend on the use case. As an undergraduate I had to do a lot of data entry so a Num Pad was a must for my laptop. As a master level student I had a nice desktop for doing processor intensive work but I carried a $99 Chromebook around to take notes, access the mainframe, and run apps on the web. I spent a lot of time in the library and theft was a huge problem so I wanted something cheap enough to not be a huge loss if it got stolen. On the rare occasions I needed a laptop in the library they have a few to check out so I would reserve one in advance. (That was a pain, but not big deal once a semester.) As a Ph.D. student I had to type tons of papers and I had to take my laptop everywhere. I got an IBM (Now Lenovo) ThinkPad and it was great. It had a good enough keyboard to type on extensively. It had a Universal Security Slot I could attach a computer cable to when I needed to make a quick copy or grab a nearby book but was light enough to carry around if I needed to be out of sight for long.

A gaming laptop is great for gaming but will generally be too heavy to take with you very much.
An ultraportable is great if you can spare the money but the performance per dollar is generally going to be a lot more.
The business class laptops, such as the ThinkPad, with usually be more stable, drop resistant and just better overall in terms of build quality.
The consumer class laptops are the best value for most of us. They will be faster, have more storage, and have more RAM than the business class at the same price point. But, the will be more likely to breakdown and to crash.

Congratulations on your child going to college and majoring in Computer Science. The demand for graduates right now is way more than the supply. That is cyclical and the current huge demand we are seeing now will fade but I do not remember a time in the past few decades when computer science graduates did not have a better change of landing a well paying job quicker that most other majors.

As Adam noted, screen quality can be a deal breaker (for those planning to use the built-in screen primarily). But many thanks for listing sRGB, even AdobeRGB gamut % in description!

While I'd pass on this config, the listing quality is top notch. Keep it up!

Dumb specs.

One of the weakest possible GPUs paired with a 6800. Just leave out the GPU if you're making a budget 6800 laptop. When are we actually getting a budget 6800 laptop that makes sense?
