I believe you can, but from what I understand they're designed to run 24/7, so they might not like you powering it off and on every day or multiple times per day. Also there's some differences how they deal with potentially bad sector (TLER). I'd probably only use it in a desktop that's running almost 24/7 anyway.

They are.

I own two 6tb (in pc case) and this exact drive (external in 3.5 adapter tray - swap between systems) along with cloud backups.

These are cmr, relatively quiet, and perfect for cold storage, I love ssd and nvme as much as everyone but 4tb is nearly $400 and the speed isn't needed for cold storage or backup. Save the extra $300 difference and spend it elsewhere.

I wanted the ds120j too at first, then I realized I would need another laptop for backup in the future and would prefer using another hdd.

Its been working great but for $50 more it seems like a no brainer to get the extra bay, better hardware and for me most importantly usb 3.0 as I did hook up my external HDD so I can see it on the network so wanted better speeds then the 2.0

Dang. I paid $10 more a few days ago and haven't even received it yet (supposed to get delivered this morning). Does Newegg do price adjustments in this case?
