These run completely silent if you are sensitive to noise for your NAS or DAS enclosure. I outgrew mine and there's definite hard drive noises out of larger versions of the same product line. Very solid drive for the money.

This drive is built specifically for backup storage arrays, particularly NAS. As far as a 25% failure rate, that's a meaningless figure without a specified timeframe, and also presumably just made up anyway. The drive has a 1M hour MTBF and a 3-year warranty. Since it's intended for bulk storage, it's not really competing with NVMe, which would cost at least 3-4 times as much for the same capacity, and motherboards are typically limited in the number of NVMe drive slots available.

This is a good deal for someone looking for a backup storage drive (as I was). For primary bulk storage I'd recommend looking at a 7200rpm HDD or cheap SSD depending on storage requirements and budget. NVMe for a primary OS or game drive.

Yes. Definitely worth the price difference. Doesn't make a huge difference in performance but I'd say it's worth it.

All valid points. If you aren't super squeamish I've been buying refurbished drives from ServerPartDeals and have yet to have an issue, particularly for backup where you won't be running the drives a lot it seems like a no brainer when you consider the price per GB.

Since I haven't heard anyone else say so far and previously there was discussion about this in other threads:
These things are not as quiet as your typical home computer drive. I bought 6 of these over the course of about 8 months and put them in a Meshify 2 for my own entry into TrueNAS scale and raidz2. I put the system in my office and it sounds like a small horde of bees happily buzzing around. It's not so loud as to be picked up on my zoom meetings but I hear it whenever I walk by or while I'm playing league of legends and stare at my persistent gray screen. Should I have bought a Define R7 case instead of the Meshify 2 to lower sound? Would be interesting to hear from someone else with these drives. Anyways, about 4 months so far at 100% uptime with no problems yet.
