12.5" HD (1366 x 768) is a little weak unfortunately.

If anyone is unaware, 8th gen is the oldest gen Intel chip that can upgrade to Windows 11. 7 series and earlier will ryde or die with Windows 10/7/XP/ME/WindowsNT/Win 98/95.

Technically the statement is correct. Average non tech person is not going to be able to follow your direction of registry hacks. I would of rephrased your post. 7x80 can't not be upgraded to windows 11 unless you hack the registry. 7x90 can be upgraded by the common person.

solid laptop for basic school work.

Million times better than a chromebook at same price.

we still have a ton of these in use at my work (various configs). No major issues

Dell didn't burn you. You set your expectations wrong. Some laptops only get 3-5 years out of the battery. It's especially dependent upon your use of the battery (and especially with older laptops). If you kept the battery at 100% or had daily full discharge cycles it wears the battery pretty fast. Thank goodness newer BIOSes let you set max charge to 80% or 60% which makes the batteries last forever.

Also you could have inspected the battery quality status when you first received it.

This is a super useful tool for battery performance: https://fossbytes.com/powercfg-ch...using-cmd/

Also, replacing a battery in an XPS isn't that hard if you are comfortable taking off a back cover. Dell publishes very helpful and detailed service manuals for all their laptops.

None of these laptops are worth it in my opinion. These are better described as "used" instead of refurbished since they are all around 5 years old and have probably seen a good amount of use.

Much better off jumping on one of the current gen i3 deals that typically come around. You will get better performance, better battery life, and a NEW machine.

Just my two cents.
No, used would be the wrong term. Refurbished means near or like new. Have you bought refurbished dells before? Even the B grade ones come clean and in great shape. Some times I get one with some case scuffs but never had I received a scratched screen or worn out keyboard (obviously batteries can be a bit worn out).

It of course depends what you buy, but the ones I have bought in the past usually still have the original warranty from the time of manufacturing.

I've bought about 20 dell refurbished laptops over the last 8 years and have generally been very happy.

Incorrect. I have several older gen laptops and desktops running Windows 11.

Yes you can install win 11 in older hardware, but it is not supported.

No problem. Just may have to check out some YT videos to learn how to modify some of the files.
I did that (change a few registry keys) to upgrade to Windows 11 on my Dell Latitude E7470. "Only" 6th gen CPU from 2015. Big Grin Runs about the same as Windows 10, don't see any speed improvement or slowdowns really. and I still get security updates. Who knows if updates may stop in the future.

To make my post somewhat relevant to this thread: I purchased my E7470 from Dell Refurbished about 1.5 years ago. 1080p FHD display, 8GB of RAM and i5-6300U CPU. It was listed as "Grade A" and is in excellent condition. Screen is perfect, keyboard/touchpad works great. I don't agree with "Grade A" classification though, as the back of the unit has a few scuffs on it. So, maybe "Grade A-" or "Grade B+".

Still works fine. For fun I added 8GB or RAM (only about $35), so it's now got 16GB. The laptop is reasonably light, maybe 3.5lb or so (wish it were a bit lighter). The battery life isn't as good as I would like (lasts about 4 hours, not sure if that is good or not for this laptop). According to the Dell BIOS, the battery is in good condition, 90% of its original rated life. I have no idea if that is valid or not.

Overall I'm satisfied with it. Use it several days a week for light productivity tasks. The thing I like most about the laptop is the keyboard feels great, screen looks sharp and bright and the chassis is strong and feels solid. It doesn't flex at all and feels very sturdy and durable. I would recommend Dell Refurbished and wouldn't hesitate to consider them in the future when I'm looking for another laptop.

Get a replacement battery.. problem fixed. Or just use it docked to your desktop monitor as a desktop replacement.

I concur. I also note that I think you have to have an M.2 SSD to run Windows 11 to have the required security features.
I am not aware of that being a requirement. However, an M.2 SSD is generally faster than a regular SSD (as long as the M.2 SSD is NVME), so would be a benefit to use an M.2 NVME SSD...

I run Win 11 on my 7th gen desktop, no problem.

I did a fresh Win 11 install on a 7th gen desktop which means no registry hacks.

Do you still get security updates? I don't care what OS I'm on as long as I'm getting critical security patches
