Check out the SSD at Samsung with education discount and multiple cash backs (~20% total combined) right now. This is similar to 980 and the final cost is about the same.

Probably the best of the DRAMless SSDs at the moment with a Bics5 112 layer nand that gives it good performance for reads but they skimped on the SLC cache and so not at all good for sustained writes (SATA SSD speeds after 12-15GB writes). Samsung 980 also slows down but has bigger SLC cache.

Realistic retail on this is $90 and has been for 5 months. Not a bad deal if you need it but hardly slick

I've been waiting for the 2tb 980 to go on sale to put in my new lg gram. I def won't get any edu discount (too late for that!) but what are the other discounts you're referencing (cash back)?

This is a commonly stocked drive at OD/OM so you should be able to do a PM. You could also buy two 24 packs of batteries today and have about $70+ of rewards to buy the drive tomorrow. Actually OD/OM has it on sale for $93 and has been at that price for a few weeks now..

Besides educational, there are other discount programs for additional 10% off. Cash back includes 5% from Discover through PayPal, 3-8% PayPal cash back offer and 12% from somewhere else. All can be stacked.

Thanks for that, and I'd probably definitely go with that approach but for some reason they don't sell the 2tb version...

Thanks, I'll look into them all. At this point I'm kind of tired of waiting. Love the new laptop but it came with only 512gb ssd (appears to be an oem version of the 980) which is already near full...

Well I figure leaky or not getting the batterys free if you are going to get the drive is a pluss. I also know a lot of folks think there is nothing to spend rewards on, well here is something.. A lot of folks dont want it to come in the mail. Well these are sold in the store, so no waiting to ship..

I read the drives are a big improvement over the SN550 that OD/OM also sells. Make sure they get you the right model because the packages are nearly identical. Unfortunately they do not have the 2tb version of this or the CS3030 2tb that Best Buy has today at $140. I am kind of thinking I will wait for a 2tb for my NUC that I use as a plex / Channels DVR server..

Any one care to comment on how hot these get for laptop use?

It really depends on the laptop (in my experience with these drives). I have the 500gb version of this WD Blue in my son's desktop, and the temps have been fine for almost 2 years now. I'd have no problem trying it in a laptop, just based on how well it was done in his desktop with a very minimal heatsink.

I am in a similar situation. Got a new laptop with 12 Gen CPU that supports PCIe Gen4 SSD but only came with Gen3. I will wait till the price of 2TB Gen4 to go below $120 before the upgrade. It is now around $175 already.
