When you have a 120Hz TV, then 24- (cinematic movies, some TV), 30- (TV) and 60- frames (digital content like YouTube) per second content all divide evenly into the refresh rate.

That means you'll get perfect frame pacing and see every frame within the content, like fast sports, movies, digital streams, or just a TV show. And yes, no judder in these cases.

It can't. It doesn't have HDMI 2.1.

120Hz on TVs is all about 3:2 pulldown for Movie watchers. It allows the TV to remove 24p judder from any source, like cable and OTA signals showing 24p content at 60Hz.

Ah crap, I just recommended it to someone saying it is. In fact, I was on Rtings and should have read the whole thing about lack of HDMI 2.1. I saw this "Native Refresh Rate
120 Hz" and I figure it can do it. I assume the built-in apps if they somehow do 4K @120hz, the panel is capable of it but w/o HDMI 2.1 or latest DP port, it cannot do 120hz based on lack of input?

It's been this price for a while now. I've been contemplating it, but the CPS warranty has very mixed reviews....and the actual price of the warranty is so low in the first place, makes me believe most them

I haven't heard of any apps that do 4k120, but if there were I suppose it could display their content. I don't know what 4k120 content there even is other than games, so for apps I can only imagine maybe game streaming to bother using 4k120. That's a lot of bandwidth that I don't think any of them can do yet, and the input latency from streaming probably is too high to really utilize 120Hz anyway.

Generally the only reason to need 4k120 inputs is if you game on a Series X, PS5, or a high end computer. If that's a high priority, the LG 48C1 would be a better option. It has been the same price a few times lately and surely will be again if they don't all sell out.

Well the only thing that needs 4K 120Hz is gaming, there's no benefit for movies so the apps wouldn't have it. It'll do 1080p 120Hz.

Firmware update added one HDMI 2.1 port but it is only for eARC. BestBuy advertises the unit with one HDMI 2.1 and 3 HDMI 2.0 ports.

Good comment. Can you explain this? What compatibility or feature is neglected due to eARC?

I have this TV. I don't know if it's Google TV or SONY's implementation, but it's so buggy. YouTube flash closes reliably when you project from phone, Paramount plus doesn't work after a few hours (always requires a reboot), and so many little bugs like Bluetooth connects but no sound.

I don't recommend it at all. Picture quality is excellent though.

It's not true HDMI 2.1. The Forum, in its infinite wisdom, allowed people to advertise something as "HDMI 2.1" even if it did not meet the full spec, as long as it met at least one part of the spec. As eARC is officially part of the HDMI 2.1 spec, any device (TV, streaming machine, etc.) can claim to be "HDMI 2.1" without actually satisfying the part that truly distinguishes HDMI 2.1: the bandwidth.

The A9S is a great TV, but it is not HDMI 2.1 in any meaningful sense. It is an HDMI 2.0 TV that supports eARC.

If I don't plan to use the TV for gaming, is any 2.1 feature other than eARC important to have?

It depends on your definition of important. The bandwidth increase is most useful for allowing 4K120Hz, and 4KHDR 4:4:4 / RGB. (Or both, simultaneously). Basically, your TV will no longer need to re-negotiate pairing when you play different content: the pipe will be "fat" enough that if it's 4K24HDR, it can just run it at 4K120HDR and since 24 divides cleanly into 120, there's no artifacting or additional processing that has to apply.

For someone like me, who watches a lot of different 4K content, this is really important: I hate that my TV has to constantly blank its screen for a few seconds as it figures out how to deal with varied frame rates/color profiles.

But if you don't care, or just don't want much native 4K content, no, it's not a huge deal. Even eARC isn't really that big of a deal. HDMI 2.0b has enough bandwidth for everything non-gaming related to display, albeit not as perfectly as we'd like.
