I purchased 6 of these for my home, was really excited about the premium features, and First Alert > Kiddie. I saw the reports of false alarms but discounted them, as I am always wary of 1 star reviews, especially when the rest are overwhelmingly positive.

14 nights after installing, woken up at 4am by a false alarm. All interconnected, so extremely distressing. Once was enough for me. Sadly, I returned them all. Wanted to love them!!

YMMV but it happened to me. Just providing a data point. Frown

These are not hardwired. There are currently no hardwired smoke alarms on the market that have Z-Wave capability.

Did you buy this particular Z-Wave model, or the interconnect model?

https://www.costco.com/first-aler...47069.html

They looks the same but are different products. This is a Z-Wave model that doesn't interconnect except through a Z-Wave base (like the Ring Alarm base station).

Did they stop selling the hard-wired ones? I have about 10 of them installed in one location.
This is the hard wired model: https://www.costco.com/first-aler...13054.html

This is the non-Z-Wave model (which looks identical):
https://www.costco.com/first-aler...47069.html

Costco still sells them, but hardwired is NOT Z-Wave compatible. Z-Wave and hard-wired are mutually exclusive.

Apologies, you are right. I bought the non Z wave model. It was the fancy talking one, then I used the Ring listener with them. Loved the potential of the talking feature because it could tell you which room was alarming, what type of hazard, and actually state the batteries were low (and in which room) (instead of you having to interpret chirp types/frequencies).

Unfortunately, there are lots of reports of this one false alarming too, including 3 other people in this thread.

With my previous experience, I'd personally want to do more research before purchasing this one. It's got different connectivity hardware, but is the smoke/CO detection hardware different to improve the false alarm problem?

Thanks for pointing that out though, it is an important detail that I missed in my hurry to share my negative experience.

Is there a wired version of these?
I am wondering the same thing. Z-wave would use quite a bit of power on these. I wonder what the battery lifespan is on these smoke detectors.

No they don't. These are zwave model. There's interconnect model from the same manufacturer. There's no zwave+interconnect one.

See my other replies. I linked to the wired versions. The Z-Wave models are for people that use Z-Wave, like for Ring Alarm integration for example.

I don't understand why every post in here is someone confused about Z-Wave. If you don't have a Z-Wave base station and don't intend to use this with Z-Wave (for example Samsung SmartThings or a Ring Alarm base station), then don't get this model and get the wired interconnected model or the voice model instead. I've linked to both of them in my other replies. They are all from the same manufacturer and all sold by Costco. This model is specifically for Z-Wave.

I think people on this thread are missing the whole point of this model. These are Z-Wave smoke alarms for those that use Ring Alarm system and subscribe to Ring Protect. The point are these are monitored and when the alarm sets off, someone from Ring will notify the fire department for you.
Not only for Ring alarm. Many use smartthings. Ring users without subscription still receive alerts. With subscription, monitoring service calls fire department for you if they can't reach you.

Yup, I forgot to mention Samsung on my earlier posts, but have added that to my later replies. There are others as well. I'm only familiar with using these with Ring.

I've had the non z-wave models for years now. I'm on my 3rd set of 3. I think I had only 1 false trigger, burning oil in a cast iron skillet. I try to avoid the dead battery chirp by changing the batteries at every time change. When the units life is spent, there's a chirp for that too.
I've never had any problem linking up the units, although it's loud and tedious. I've paid up to $45 (2008) to $39 (2022), so the Costco price is great for 3 units. Just be sure to check the mfg date, anything over a year old & you won't get the full life expectancy. I've experienced 7-8 years.

I have quite a bit of z-wave devices in my house, connected to a Hubitat. However, they are all wired or plugged in, except for a z-wave lock. What I don't understand is why there is no wired z-wave model of these smoke detectors. It's baffling to me.

My main concerns of the z-wave model is lack of intercommunication and battery life, though I've read battery typically lasts a year.

I did some research and if you want wired z-wave functionality, it's best to go with wired non z-wave smoke detectors and pair them with EcoLink firefighters which detect the sounds and alert via z-wave.

These are junk. I bought 6 of them on a previous deal and all 6 are now in the garbage. They eat batteries and false causing my dogs to have a panic attack. Yes I used the expensive energizers and yes they still burned through them.

Unless they decide to offer a wired version look elsewhere.
What hub did you connect them to?

After reading 4 pages of posts I think I will have to keep waiting for a reliable Z-wave alarm. One day I may decide to put a 120V to 3V dc transformer in each alarm outlet, just to make these things work right.
