Feel free to tell any mechanic proposing crazy repairs that you appreciate their comments and will consider the advice, then politely walk out the door. There's no rule that you have to take their advice or pay for their service. Perhaps you'll do the repair yourself, perhaps you have your own mechanical that does these things and you prefer them.

Don't let that be the reason you avoid a certain shop. Some shop mgrs push that type of tactic, doesn't mean you have to abide. As long as they do the work asked, you got your $'s worth.

I don;t know about firestone but Goodyear 3 year tire alignment plan was a scam. All they did was find fault and push and push for unnecessary repairs. When I took my car to another local business, it was just alignment.
Upon that experience, I say that lifetime alignment is a scam unless Firestone is in the business of charity.
Tire balance is what you need every 5k miles.

Haven't gotten an alignment on my cars ever... Drives true as an arrow... Pretty big racket they got going on with this alignment stuff it's like a placebo pill makes you feel good because you got it and paid for it but doesn't do jack.
This. IME, alignment is only necessary if you've got extremely worn out suspension parts (200k miles) or you've got some accident damage. In those cases, alignment is very necessary. But as a routine maintenance item...no.

Rotation/balance is a different story--that's definitely needed periodically.

I agree, depends on the store. They always do the alignment and they always tweak it closer to center even if its within range. Only one time, they woudn't do it because they said my tie-rod end was bad, when I insisted to look myself, I noticed the jam nut was loose and, after tightening it, they agreed. It is generally about double the cost of an alignment. Same for lifetime wheel balance and rotation. Over the life of the car (maybe 10yrs), well worth it.

Maybe it depends on the car, but I get mine checked every 6-12mo or so. Over the 10yrs I owned my car, it was out of range maybe 5 times. Maybe it also depends on the roads. This doesn't include the time I had to get both inner tie rods replaced and another time I had to get an UCA replaced. Considering the cost of a lifetime alignment is about double, it easily pays for itself over the lifetime of a car.

If you never get an alignment checked, then you never really know how far off it is. Now I don't know how bad it has to be to start putting wear on your tires, maybe it has to be out alot more than the spec tolerances. But given the relatively low cost, I see it as a pretty low risk. They are perhaps losing money on the alignment hoping to sell you on other services. You can always say no or go elsewhere for those other services. I only use firestone for alignment, rotation, and balance. The lifetime plan costs are pretty much all the money I've given them over the life of my car.

ANYWAYS, I don't have time to go in this weekend, but the local firestone said they will honor the $40 off even if I come in weeks later.

That got me thinking, how much is the new years sale usually off? Now realizing they will honor it and or I can just walk in a store, maybe I will save more by just waiting. I have a new car so it prob doesnt really need an alignment at this point.

I just realized I can just use the search button.
Looks like $50 off. Who knows if this year it will still be $50 considering how prices of everything have been going up.

Found the non-PA Driver. In general you're right; however with our state's garbage roads we need alignments more often.

I paid 169.99 otd. Invoice showed store charged $209.99 for lifetime minus $40 Labor Day promo but no tax as this is a service in CA. Told them I just wanted to pay for it since new tires were being delivered to Costco this week and they said no problem just bring the car back after for the first alignment. I didn't argue the price for $10.

The last four alignment printer has been broken so I don't know if they did anything. Super annoying.
