This is for the older version that has a read/write speed of 1050 MB/s.

The new version is faster at 2000 MB/s. Id just wait for a Black Friday sale on that one. Link to Gen2x2:

I currently use 1tb to backup photos and videos from all our cellphones and computers. 4tb would be better but it's still a high price imo. These will continue to come down in price as time goes by and technology improves. I have a friend who's a professional photographer and uses this drive to quickly have a second copy of photos on site as a safe guard against a failed camera or SD card.

Based on % off it seems like a good deal, but I'm kind of confused as who needs to carry around 4 TB... I have a best buy gift card burning a hole in my pocket though...

I guess it's an okay deal per TB, since during an average sale a portable 1TB SSD is $100. The design is a bit goofy though.

I carry around a 4TB. Each wedding I shoot is about 550-800GB large. It's a good size for working photographers or videographers who travel.

Got the 2 TB for ~$160 some time ago after some discounts and it works well with my 14" M1 Pro MBP. The write speed reaches around ~950 MB/s and drops to ~880 MB/s after software encrypting the entire drive. However, it does get pretty warm when connected even when it's sitting idle. Can't wait til the 4TB drops below $300.

This is not a great SD IMHO as this is not the newer Gen with higher speeds as the poster above mentioned 1050 MB/s.

The actual speed isn't much faster though. Best to either make your own with PCIE Gen 4 SSD or just go with this deal. Actual speed is around 750 read and write. Mine has been work great for over a year.

What is the long term reliability for these types of drives? I have a lot of photos I need to back up and don't want to lose them.

You need to have a compatible USB 3.2 2x2 port, which a lot of people don't. None of the Macs have this.
