Here is another bike on clearance for $98 free s/h (was 398).

Men's 27.5" Decathlon ST100 [walmart.com]

I realize this is not the same level of the original post but good deal for a bike.

LOL at thumbs down. Some people will down anything…

"You've saved $10 with WOWFRESH promo code"

Amex Everyday Bluecash supposedly 3% for online orders, YMMV if this counts for pickup...

In for one. I bought a bike for $20 that needed work yesterday....so that's backburner now LOL.

I just bought another one. I might just give it away to the first kid that complements or shows interest in my first Axum.

I ride it on the road to get to the trails near me, it's still relatively fast and turns fast. It'll prob be less responsive handling wise than the decathlon since it's like 6 lbs heavier but it should have a higher top speed with the 29" wheels and tires. Plus the tires are more gravel than off-road, they're pretty fast. If the questioner isn't aiming for top speed but cruising I think the Axum is still the better deal, it'll be a lot more cushiony (29x2.6 absorb a lot, if they covert to tubeless it'll be even more cushier) and able to handle abuse and the disc brakes will be stronger
I'm not sure how much of a difference it will make but I suspect the other bike will have both a better top range and low range as well as tighter spacing between the gears you might use on flat ground. Yeah, that 21 speed setup likely delivers only 14 usable ratios but odds are it still has greater overall range. I'm certain I can both ride faster and up steeper climbs (on road) with my 90s, 21spd mtb with 26" wheels simply because it's lighter and I have a wider total gear range and finer spacing between gears. This comes at the expense of having to mess with front and rear shifting to get that full range of course. I do agree that the big tires on the Axum will have a ride quality advantage.

As a point of perspective, when I got my first 29" bike I had it in my head that it would totally blow away my older bike. Well when it came to off road/trail stuff it certainly did but on the road it absolutely didn't. This is part of why my 90s bike became my family ride bike.

The flip side is if someone thinks they may try actual trail/single track riding the Axum will be a good choice. A good offroad bike may not be the best on road option it's going to be able to do it while the reverse may not be true.

I recently retired and need something to do in the mornings and something to ride alongside my 6 year old granddaughter. Mine is due Saturday.

Thanks OP and others for the great video links!

Well got mine today, quick setup. I'm just north of 5'10" and when I saw the sign inside the rim of 6'0" I'll admit I was questioning it. Now that it's together and the tires with air, I clear the crossbar standing, but can't stand over the seat when it's fully down. I'll have to cut an inch or 2 off the post. No big deal but I'll wait for the replacement seat to come (the one from the assembly video that the guy recommended). Still need to do all the adjustments though.

I'm going to say it depends. The Decathlon is a lot more like a 90s mtb. It's not as good off road. However, if "off road" is relatively smooth paths and most of what you want to do is ride around the neighborhood/town then the compromises needed to make the Axum better offroad will make it less comfortable around town. It will also take more effort to ride around town. Think Jeep Wrangler with the extra off road packages vs Toyota RAV4. Yeah, the RAV4 can actually do some offroad driving, certainly more than a typical car. However, it can't do what a Wrangler can do. But the Wrangler makes you pay for that extra off road ability in the form of gas mileage and ponderous handling on road. The RAV4 is much better if your offroad work is light and you will be driving on the highway more often than not.

The Axum is more specialized and certainly much more capable off road but for casual riding it's probably going to be a disappointment in comparison.
Good analogy.

Another big factor is that the axum riding position is very aggressive. My back was happier riding the decathlon st100.

Big part of that is the flat handlebars, which is good for XC/speed and climbing. Getting a handlebar with alot of rise, 50 to 75 mm, will make it more comfortable as you'll be more upright.

I bought and will be returning.

There is good and bad. Mine had a bent rear derailleur but I was able to fix that. The brakes were weak. I could not fix that. The drivetrain was good after tuning at first, but started popping after a few miles and then the bottom bracket loosened a couple miles later. The frame was good. I liked the bars and wheels/tires. It could be a good base to upgrade at this price. $200 for decent fork, $100 for hydro brakes, and a tool kit to keep the bottom bracket adjusted and you'll have a pretty nice bike.

When your saddle is at proper height you shouldn't be able to reach the ground with your feet while seated. If you prefer dismounting over the saddle then get yourself a dropper post so it can be at proper height while riding and then drop it when you want to dismount or come to a stop and be in a relaxed position.

Well I was in my underwear and sandals doing this in my (closed) garage so..... not exactly the opportunity to check seat height accurately laugh out loud

Taking off an inch or 2 of the post won't hurt anything. As I said, not much sense in really worrying about it too much until I get the other seat in a couple weeks.

So far looks pretty solid, kick stand doesn't seem to allow for much tilt, it's pretty tippy when sitting by itself.

This bike has gotten good reviews on YouTube, and I would consider one if I needed one. But I already have 3 road bikes and 1 mountain bike, and I don't ride any of them any more. I should probably sell them. All I do now is ride my electric skateboard back and forth to work.

I have the medium DP version of this. Amazing for what you get especially if you're into building bikes
