WD Gold: Data Center drives, Bulk Cold Storage solutions and High Capacity Workloads in smaller RAID arrays.
(a few other colors…)
WD Red for NAS and RAID needs
WD Purple: for CCTV, Network and Direct Recording Surveillance needs
WD Green: for Lower Power Consumption for quieter and Cooler requirements …supposedly good for the environment.
WD Black: think black Amex card

2 of my 4 4-T drives in my NAS drive died during the heat wave about two weeks ago. It hit 112F here. Good timing for me. Bought four to replace them all. Should buy two as hot swap drives - still thinking about it.

That's a Great deal per TB, @ $11+/+ but do you trust your data to renewed item, is that another word for refurbished? A vacuum I see but hard drives...

I use my nas for surveillance, should I go with red or purple?

With data I don't want to lose I only trust a sound backup strategy.

The question to ask isn't with losing data but time and money.

FYI the vendor is goHardDrive

Exactly all drives can and will eventually fail. I've got 3tb drives of similar origins in my NAS and so far one of them has been replaced. Was working fine still but starting to throw some SMART errors and running a little warm so I replaced it. I figure a used data center class drive is at least as good as using a shucked drive or a consumer drive not designed for a raid. I'm not willing to pay the premium for a new Red Pro to get the drive they want me to buy.

I dont have good success with renewed drives. They still last a long while, but it seems almost most of the drives that dont fail that were purchased new, still end up lasting longer than the renewed ones do. Maybe if I sat down and did the math, the time + price difference between the new and renewed will be pretty close. The longest lasting renewed drives I have are all used in an external USB case.

Why would you want to replace with the same drive if it can't handle heat? I've had drives last year's in a hot poorly thermally controlled environment without issue

Th current drives were bought new in 2016 and consumer level drives. They've gone through heat all summer for 5 years, no issues. The 6th summer two drives took a dump. The other two drives most likely at the end of their life.

These drives are enterprise class drives but refurb. Taking a chance I'll get similar life out of them at a fraction of the cost.

Golds use slightly more power than red pro's (like 7w vs 5.5w, something like that)

Totally agreed, that's why this deal is important. Buying 8 for raid 1 distributed in families houses synchronized over 3 continens while keeping cost low and have a set of cold backup.
