WD Red for NAS and RAID needs
WD Purple: for CCTV, Network and Direct Recording Surveillance needs
WD Green: for Lower Power Consumption for quieter and Cooler requirements …supposedly good for the environment.
WD Black: think black Amex card
Manufacturer warranty: New WD Gold drives have 5 year manufacturer warranties. The drives I purchased still had almost 2 years left on their manufacturer warranty based on the WD warranty status tool: https://support-en.wd.com/app/warrantystatusw
Seller warranty: goHardDrive has been around for over 10 years, is US based (La Puente, CA), and is an official MDD HD reseller so I believe the company would honor their 5 year seller's warranty
Reliability: Gold drives are rated for 2.5M hours MTBF vs 1M hours MTBF for consumer-grade drives. Possibly due to being helium filled and having built-in vibration protection?
Performance: 256MB cache and 7200rpm speed (128MB cache for 4TB model)
The drives I purchased had less than 3 years of use (as advertised), passed extended SMART tests, and had no reallocated sectors or errors of any kind. In my opinion, enterprise drives are built to a much higher standard than the consumer drives which gave me a level of comfort.
The only negatives for me are that the drives tend to run louder and are more power hungry than consumer drives.

The question to ask isn't with losing data but time and money.

These drives are enterprise class drives but refurb. Taking a chance I'll get similar life out of them at a fraction of the cost.
