Would this be a good drive to transfer old photos and videos. Unplug and just keep in storage?

why not get these with 3 year warranty instead of this one without warranty? it's the same drive and even cheaper.

That's a Great deal per TB, @ $11+/+ but do you trust your data to renewed item, is that another word for refurbished? A vacuum I see but hard drives...
there's a pretty reasonable chance these are new. data centers keep these as spares to be hot swapped as needed when drives fail. no corporation that i know of that has anything they don't want getting out sells or allows to be sold used drives. they are destroyed for security reasons. the last time i bought a deal like this was 2016 and i received 2010 manf date drives. they were brand new just new old stock

I know hard drives are like a religion around here so I'm not going to argue this is a better deal than other drives posted here. Rather, I'll explain the reasons I took advantage of a similar deal on refurbished 8TB WD Gold HDs from goHardDrive:
  • Manufacturer warranty: New WD Gold drives have 5 year manufacturer warranties. The drives I purchased still had almost 2 years left on their manufacturer warranty based on the WD warranty status tool: https://support-en.wd.com/app/warrantystatusweb
  • Seller warranty: goHardDrive has been around for over 10 years, is US based (La Puente, CA), and is an official MDD HD reseller so I believe the company would honor their 5 year seller's warranty
  • Reliability: Gold drives are rated for 2.5M hours MTBF vs 1M hours MTBF for consumer-grade drives. Possibly due to being helium filled and having built-in vibration protection?
  • Performance: 256MB cache and 7200rpm speed (128MB cache for 4TB model)
The drives I purchased had less than 3 years of use (as advertised), passed extended SMART tests, and had no reallocated sectors or errors of any kind. In my opinion, enterprise drives are built to a much higher standard than the consumer drives which gave me a level of comfort.

The only negatives for me are that the drives tend to run louder and are more power hungry than consumer drives.

I use my nas for surveillance, should I go with red or purple?
To be honest, from the vast quantity of research I've read and even talking to WD, there isn't much of a benefit to going purple vs red especially when they cost more. You have to get a Red Pro or Plus though as those are CMR. Considering Reds are meant for 24x7 use anyways, they can handle the writes no problem, and should give you better playback performance on a timeline, however either drive would be just fine.

I've been using a 4TB Red Pro for my Blue Iris drive for over 2 years now, no issues.

It's buried in the description on Amazon, so you may not have noticed, but the 4TB drive posted for this deal has a 5-year warranty

Q: The listing has conflicting warranty information. In severa places it says 5 years, in another it says 90 days. What is the actual warranty?

A: Actually the listing is pretty clear. There are two warranties: 90 Days from Amazon and 5 years from reseller (goHardDrive).

1. "The product is refurbished, fully functional, and in excellent condition. Backed by the 90-day Amazon Renewed Guarantee."

2. "(Factory Refurbished, Factory Sealed, Zero Bad Sectors) Backed by a 5-Year Warranty from Reseller, Worry Free 100% Full Refund " see less

OMG, after all the downvotes on your posts on the DDR5 FP deal - did you reallly need to repeat the same misleading garbage FOUR times there, let alone once? - I was curious if you posted any comments that actually contained useful factual information. It doesn't appear to be the case

Unless this offers factory warranty fro WD I wouldn't chance it. It could last 3 months then you're out 50 bucks. Just spend a little more on a new one for piece of mind.

Bought one. These are the kinds of deals I come to SD for! Mine will be used to replace a Samsung 1TB drive that's been going since 2011!
