For anyone looking at this kit, while the tools DO have brushless motors the overall kit is a lesser verison of Ryobi's brushless line. The full bore brushless tools take advantage of HP batteries. The tools in this kit cannot do that, and the batteries included are not the better HP versions. Also, $199 has been the price on this kit since before Labor Day. It's still a good price, just not a true screaming deal. Now if they tossed in a 6th tool...

Ryobi and other manufacturers need to be taken to task for offering 1.5Ah batteries. Virtually useless and creating Mounds of toxic waste. If every brand offered Minimun 2Ah batteries, there'd be less consumer time wasted and less toxic waste. Also wld be great if they offered an exchange program wherein they replaced the batteries inside n resold them as refuilt. Far Less waste. SDers cld lead the charge.

Without the flashlight, batteries and charger, that would be $50 per tool. Even with 30% off reconditioned at DTO, you wouldn't get the multi-tool and reciprocating saw that cheap. Reconditioned drill/driver combo with batteries and charger are currently $119.99 at DTO.

Via the battery hack deals, you can get individual tools new from HD cheaper than on DTO. Got the brushless compact reciprocating saw for $55.

I can't speak specifically to Ryobi's batteries, but most high-capacity portable lithium ion batteries of any type today (power banks, power tool batteries, etc) are using standardized battery cells hooked up to a controller. They're most often 18650s, but these batteries come in an enormous amount of sizes (14400, 18650, 21700, 26650...) and are readily available online, and they do come in formats that are user replaceable. They are almost never user replaceable, however, as the cells are soldered into a combined battery bank and then installed in a non-serviceable enclosure.

Ryobi, Dewalt, Milwaukee, Anker, etc etc etc can all easily make their batteries user serviceable, and can sharply reduce environmental waste and consumer cost as a result. Then, that 1.5Ah battery doesn't have to be anything more than a 3-cell enclosure that can be sold as enclosure only or with cells. When an enclosure fails, the batteries can be swapped easily and safely into another enclosure, just like rechargeable AAs. They don't do that for a number of reasons, which in the case of power tools is often because making batteries expensive makes it much easier to "lock" people into an ecosystem and guarantee future sales. You buy one battery and suddenly it's a much harder sell to buy a tool from a different brand; but if the cells were removable, they could be charged individually and the enclosures could be easily swapped.

I think addressing non-serviceable lithium ion batteries in general would be a good place to start with dealing with the low-capacity batteries and recycling/production impact of lithium ion batteries

The drill and driver brushless combo has been $55 on direct. The other tools individually add up to the other $70. It's doable if you wait for the right combo of sales on direct and don't need any of these things today.

I got some great deals from DTO over the years, and I think my favorite is the 40v auger I got this year. $55 for factory blemish brushless drill/driver with batteries and charger would be great.

I still have several factory blemished tools that I have not opened, but the price was to good to pass up.

The brushless multi-tool in this set is vastly superior to the Ryobi brushed version. Not only for the motor but the blade locking mechanism is easier and sturdier as well. Drill is less bulky than the entry level brushed version.

Went to home depot and I ended up picking this 4 tool combo instead for $210 as it comes with a 2 amp and 4 amp battery instead of the 2x1.5 but I will not get the brushless flashlight 😔
