Found it... Gen 3, which is surprising for a new laptop.

My intel laptop cpu's never had issues as much as the AMD laptop cpu's (all the issues I remember with thermals were related to HP/AMD and some other brands combined with AMD cpu's.)
The issues with the AMD laptop cpu's were so bad that the GPU would stop working, things would de-solder from the excess heat. Horror stories, for real.
The issues you had with AMD must have been pre-Ryzen. I haven't heard of any issues with Ryzen. HP on the other hand is one I stay away from.

I did not get the info from anywhere - this is from first hand experience - you can also look it up on various forums if you search yourself.
I used to replace and resolder several components due to these issues in order to make the laptops functional again (at least for a while). All caused by the thermal issues from AMD - granted it was mostly HP laptops with SHIT cooling. But again - those same HP laptops were fine with intel cpu's at that time.
