This price range was great a year or so ago when then Duo2 was newer. Now it's like a relic. I bought this for $340 (256gb; unlocked) last year out of curiosity. I've used it recently as well with the newest updates. It's usable, but far from ideal.

The Duo is a first gen product and it feels like one. Wait for the Duo2 to drop or go with another phone all together.

Price has stubbornly hovered around $300 for a long time. I don't think they really want to sell these.

Also note that these don't support 5G and that's now a must for any new phone purchase IMO.

This 4G device is the fastest 4G I've ever seen, pulling down 400 MBps on Speedtest often. 5G isn't everywhere and when it is, it's congested.

I really liked the phone but unfortunately due to operating system limitations, today I returned it. I don't understand why microsoft cannot upgrade to android 12. I hope microsoft really support this device with regular updates in terms of software and hardware.

They are skipping Android 12 and going straight to Android 12L and will be doing so soon:

Microsoft has released monthly security updates, as shown here:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-...982b5665f1

On the other hand, Samsung and many companies don't prioritize security updates like Microsoft has shown a track record. There are pros and cons, but for a few bills, these original SD1 is the easiest step to get into the folding phone, the only way to get dual-screen this inexpensively, and lastly able to run full Windows 11 natively:

That last video linked might introduce some to a solid Youtube channel that is helpfully critical and thorough for the Surface Duo owners. I'm tired of hype, echo chambers, and shallow opinions, so I try to share what might help those on the fence.

Does anybody know if the CPS warranty starts once the 1-year manufacturer warranty ends? Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Got my answer straight from the website. It will add after the manufacturer's warranty...

Yes, 5G definitely has improved cell coverage in some areas and it does neccesarily improve 4G in those areas. That's why having 5G on any new phone you buy now is important. This is counterintuitive to me but it's what I have experienced.

Worth maybe a 100. Purchased as a new open box from Woot. Volume control quit working after 2 m. Woot purchase- no warranty. Screen is freezing couple times a day - everybody complains about it- multiple updates still did not solve problem. Nothing works even WiFi calling- spent hours with CS. Battery time horrible. Camera horrible Never again

Stop making things up along the way and stop trashing a great American company!
OS will be update to 12L in their announce roadmap and it has not missed out a monthly security patch and improvement.

And where I live in the boonies, we get 5G service from Tmobile, but zero 4G Tmobile. We've tried it with friend's phones -- we're in a hole unfortunately. Before the 3G shutdown, we had 1 bar of 3G Sprint and that was it.

One of their cellular resellers (Boost, ugh) forced us to migrate our handhelds since they were 3G only -- and the freebie Android they gave us had a 5G radio. We went from soberingly zero reception to 2 bars of service.

What I'm saying though -- 5G isn't a boogeyman like you're claiming it to be. Sometimes it's actually useful for some people.
It's because these are missing a lot of bands and TMobile's in particular. Definitely skip this version for T-Mobile or one of their MVNOs

I got one of these from Woot when they had the 256 GB for $249. Like a lot of folks here (is that fair to say?) I wanted to get one of these Duos just to play with it,but was holding off until it hit a reasonable price point. For me, $249 was reasonable enough. My take: yeah, this is a really cool little device. After the first boot up it downloaded Android 11 and whatever Surface updates are out there. Is it now bug free? Well . . . not quite. I still have the right-hand screen go unresponsive to taps once in a while. I have small hands for a guy (no comments, please) and I do not find the phone took large or unwieldy to use for calls. It fits in my pocket well enough. The camera is mediocre -- okay for documenting something that you see, but nothing remotely as good as an iPhone or Pixel camera. The dual-screen aspect of the device is truly nifty. You can text someone with either your calendar or a web page open on the other screen. That is perhaps the most useful part for me. Also (and this why, in my very particular usage case, this little sucker is true "keeper") it works brilliantly as a bedside e-book reader for Scribd e-books. Complaints? The (occasionaly) unresponsiveness of the right-hand screen. The camera. Quirks: it has taken me a while to get used to the way the home screen shifts (very quickly) as you open and close apps. Is it worth $249 (or thereabouts, depending on the current deal)? That is a very subjective question, of course, but for me, definitely yes. I may not use it as my daily driver phone, but it is a fine and interestingly useful phone, and a really nifty little e-book reader, and it is seriously fun to play with.

My comment was not specifically about this device, but 5G in general. Thanks.

Missed the woot deal which was $40 cheaper for the 128gb. I need a replacement android tablet for my galaxy tab s2 and this fits the bill because it is OLED and I can hold it by one hand. The new galaxy tabs are too large if I want an OLED screen. How is the battery life for people using this?
