I have this laptop, got it from Micro Center about 6 months ago for $899 brand new.

It's a beast, but be aware the screen is TERRIBLE, 144hz is a lie and it suffers from some of the worst ghosting I've ever encountered on a modern LCD.

There's a model with a 1440p screen and another with a 300hz 1080p, both are well reviewed and I'm planning on trying to find of of those screens and swapping it in, because gaming on this 144hz screen is just terrible.

damn it's like you guys live in 2006...

it has 2 m.2 slots, 2 RAM slots and a wifi cards slot, getting anything with an HDD is practically impossible now
all you have to do is flip it, take the backplate off and change add more

and WTF was that about 6gb of RAM? that's the VRAM.... and no, 32gb is still overkill for anything gaming related

please refrain from giving terrible advice next time

No dedicated gpu laptop uses the usb-c port for power delievery. I wish they would but that's one thought to keep in mind.
More interested in display port alt mode, have an external monitor I'd want to be able to use for work..

I wouldn't be caught dead using one of these puppies. It's almost guaranteed to break within a year. Get a Lenovo laptop instead.
Lol I got one from 2013, heavy af but still chugging long just fine, original hdd, ssd added and 16g of ram. Works fine for my needs!

The problem with gaming laptops is they aren't really future proof. You can't really add and remove components like a desktop/tower. The most you MIGHT be able to add is ram and a hard drive (6 gigs ram isn't going to cut it, you're better off with at least 16 gigs, better at 32, but you're usually paying a premium on Laptop ram sticks.)

512 gig drive is likely going to fill up fast with games, COD itself taking up around 130 gigs. Not sure if this is an SSD or an HDD (Likely a HDD), So you'd want to get an SSD to swap it out with (Samsung Evo 870 is what I got) with at least 1 TB space. If it has 2 hard drive Bays, that's better.

Space runs out fast if you're playing lots of different games with friends, and you typically want to keep them installed.

Desktops you can upgrade everything over time. Stationary, sure, but it's worth it for more capabilities and parts you can add on.
I'm not sure you could have gotten more wrong info in there if you tried.

Someone tell me how many years I can expect to get out of this thing? Should I wait for something more future proof? This can play most games at 1440p 60fps right? I know nothing.
honestly, id probably wait until next years laptops

not sure what the prices will be but if all the rx7700 chips are going into laptop you will get your 1440p performance at 60 fps easily plus with usb 4.0 functionality you will have the ablility to have actual gpu docks so later on you will be able to connect an external gpu but we are entering the territory with traditional rasterization there will be a wall

where the only increase in fidelity will most likely be due to direct storage (reducing pop in) and ray-tracing for more realistic shadows/lighting/reflections

but if you need a laptop right now?? with this gpu u can game at 1080p ultra (on the more realistic games) at around 60fps... esports you will be hitting the 100-150fps at ultra

I bought this a few months ago and am quite happy with it. That said I'm *NOT* a gaming rig expert by any stretch. I just wanted to be able to play RDR2 in peace without fighting for the family computer, and it has served me well. Yeah, it took up a ton of disk space along with a couple other smaller games, but I added a second drive. It has also run my Quest 2 games admirably. If you're just Joe Average Gamer who isn't looking to overclock, tinker, etc...and want something to play games out of the box then here ya go.

I am sitting in my kitchen shopping for a new laptop. I am on a Lenovo Thnkpad T550 that I have taken up to 1TB with a 2.5 SSD, and added additional RAM. easily replaced keyboard on a couple of times, that has a dead trackpad, and two out of three USB-A hinked out due to user abuse (me). Both its internal and semiexternal batteries are swollen and popping the case. Then again it is seven or eight years old and everything I have had to fix has been insanely easy to do (I am not going to take on the USBs with the other things going wrong as it is time for a new one. It has been a semi road warrior machine and used a LOT.

My wife got my daughter an ACER Aspire two years ago and it had a number of hardware issues, and the motherboard died at two years old. Acer offered no assistance at all.

Before my Lenovo Thinkpad T550 I had a Lenovo Ideapad line U410, and that was a piece of garbage in every way. Hinge was so bad, and wifi antenna routing were wrong that there were eventually two class actions. I kept it two years.

I have had computers since my Kaypro II, and laptops since the first week the Toshiba T-1000 came out.

I think you are absolutely right about Acer, but I would say my own experience with the cheaper line of Lenovo is it is not great either.

I will say though, I would have a heart attack if my machine truly died due to the way I use it with a lot of data and programs on my hdd. My kid was not phased at all as their programs are subscriptions/apps and their data is all on line. So I think for the student buyer, the home user, they dont really care if a machine dies in two or three years.

While everyone came down on the user quoted, It is not like he is living in the 1800's. he is giving the right advice for just a couple of years ago. I have had portable ands laptop computers since they were invented. Since it was often other people's money I often bought a new one for myself every five to six months and with a wife, and three kids who went through school I have bought a lot of for them with our own money.

When replacing a machine a couple of months ago, I did as usual and harvested ram and its 1tb 2.5 SSD. and its 128 m2 before throwing's it in the trash. I usually get some use out of that stuff. Heck the laptop I am typing on has space for two user replaceable 2.5 ssds. And yes I am in shock at the idea of soldered ram. Some of htis may go into my self built tower that has been running as a server 24/7 for eight years.

So dont be too hard on people like above. It is actually pretty recent that the makers have decided they do not give a hoot about people who would self upgrade their laptop.

I have a Nitro 5 from 2018 and the screen was equally terrible. It was so bad, I replaced it with a TN display which requires calibration to even display the correct colors, and it was still a lot better than the turd they shipped it with. Black levels on it were abysmal, to say the least. Gaming with any game that has dark levels was pretty much impossible. So yeah, probably best to factor in a screen replacement if you really want one of these. I'd say other than the screen and the noisy cooling (to be expected) it's been pretty good though.

Well, I'm taking a chance on it. Need a backup laptop when my primary gaming laptop (Gigabyte Aorus) fails, which unfortunately has happened 3 times in the 21 months I've had it. Should be arriving Sunday. Might be a mistake, but I paid for the 3 year extended warranty, as well. Hoping this one serves me well as an alternate system when my main system is at the manufacturer for repairs. Thanks for the notification of this deal!

Right. And Laptop ram sticks aren't really that much more expensive than Desktop ram anymore.
Heck I just checked prices for Crucial and a 16GB DDR4 stick has the same price for desktop and laptop i.e. $55

The only reasonable argument against gaming laptops is potentially lower TDP for CPUs/GPUs and lack of cooling solutions which I see as a related problem.

Futureproof is a fools errand. It needs at least 8 more gigs of ram right off the line. It should hold up alright.

The RTX 3060 mobile is comparable to a GTX 960 desktop. So, even with a good screen you won't be able to run many games at 144 frames per second. Maybe, Minecraft?? But I don't see why I'd want to play MC at 144 frames.
A RTX 3060 mobile and and GTX 960 are not remotely comparable. The mobile 3060 will be "comparable" but a bit slower than a regular 3060 that can double to quadruple the frames of GTX 960 in many more modern games.
