Both integrated mobile dGPU and fixed-location eGPU are compromises in some way or another. Although you can take them with you with your laptop, mobile dGPUs are still less capable than desktop GPUs but require a bigger laptop for cooling them. eGPUs have no such limitation. You can run a 500W top-of-the-line GPU on your 2.5lbs laptop wherever you decide to park the monster. Yet, you still have a svelte, 2.5lbs laptop for the road. But there's no GPU anymore. Compromise or compromise?

I know a bunch of guys (let's be honest - they're *all* guys) who work for Dassault Systèmes doing 3D rendering for a large automaker in the area (Metro Detroit). None of the car commercials that you see are real in any way - these guys generate them digitally. It is fascinating. Most of them have their assigned work desktop PC with the requisite GPU (they required auxiliary cooling).

My son has an HP Envy 13 i7-1165.- 16GB RAM; 1TB nvme; 2.8lbs; $800+tax.

Add:
  • eGPU dock $350
  • GeFord RTX 2060 from old desktop PC: Free
  • Ability to upgrade GPU in the ePGU box: Free
For a total of $1150, we get an ultraportable that can be used for reasonably high-end gaming and we can upgrade when required (as it turns out, many of his games run on the iGPU just fine). Since we could not afford a gaming laptop *pushing $2000 or more) anyway, this was the best option for now and the future.

Cool story.

It's still a tiny edge case of an edge case. Most people don't know you can do this, wouldn't spend the money to do all of this if they could, and otherwise would focus on the all-in-one laptop with gaming GPU anyway. And part of what's nice about a laptop is the GPU moves with you…

And yes, I've been familiar with these for years. The Mac at one time supported this, so it was an interesting product.

It's still a tiny, tiny edge case.

My Lenovo is 12 years old… slapped in an SSD and new memory last year and it boots in under 5 seconds. Still kicking hard.

The wifi/BT card is soldered to the board? It'll be an absolute hard pass if so.

My last Asus laptop was like that. Could not believe it was soldered on. Had to send it in 3 times--each time they did nothing to fix it. Eventually they gave me a different laptop as the mobo was OOS due to the pandemic.

Same for me. I looked up the hardware maintenance manual, and indeed wifi/BT appears to be soldered, as there's zero mention of replacing that card. Espeically unfortunate as they used a non-Intel wifi/BT chip. I've found that nothing comes close to Intel for reliability of Wifi and Bluetooth.

I don't know why anyone would consider a mobile AMD since they do not have Thunderbolt, which is amazing.
The obvious answer is battery life. I keep wondering if people who make the Thunderbolt point are paid by either Intel or a laptop vendor who does not have AMD offerings. With USB4, which this model has, there is absolutely no meaningful advantage to having an Intel mobile processor for a thin and light laptop. None.

From the Q&A

Thank you for your question! Please be advised that the ThinkPad X13 Gen 3 AMD (13") - Thunder Black (21CM0022US) laptop comes with a 3 Cell 41Wh integrated battery.

Also, you can refer to the link below for complete specification :
https://psref.lenovo.com/Product/...MD?MT=21CM [lenovo.com]
This is the most important / relevant post in this thread. 41whr is ridiculous. I contacted Lenovo sales support and all four configurations currently available on the Lenovo website come with the 41Whr battery. Meanwhile the X13 Gen 2 5650u with 8gb RAM and 256gb ssd that is selling for $600 has the 56Wh. What is wrong with Lenovo this year. The small vs large battery option is an absolute disaster for this and other models.

EXACTLY - when I plug into my Thunderbolt monitor, it automatically starts charging my laptop. So I don't even need to use a power cord at that point. Much easier. Oh, and I can daisy-chain in my second monitor onto the first.
And my wireless keyboard and mouse dongle. One cable and my laptop becomes a dual 4k desktop with external keyboard, mouse, and charging.

It is wonderful and likely the reason that Apple pays Intel in order to license Thunderbolt on their new CPUs. Their customers can't do without it.

Yes. Apple license Thunderbolt from Intel because of the conspiracy. It has nothing to do with necessity:

https://www.apple.com/displays/
"Three USB-C ports for your accessories

One Thunderbolt 3 port to connect and charge your compatible Mac"
Lots of Mac users actually employ Thunderbolt to do video editing / processing on extremely high resolution monitors. In order to properly edit 4K video, you require at least 5K-6K of monitor, if not 8K.

Apple doesn't offer USB-C monitors for a reason. They license Thunderbolt for a reason. Use the USB-C ports "for your accessories".

Any thermal issues from having both USB C ports on the same side?

I think they just add up the MSRP on all components and that's the "full price" which is never the actual price. I love lenovo's plethora of discounts because once in a while you can double or triple-dip.

Like right now you can apply these 2 coupons, get $100 off via Amex if you have that offer and also get 12% cash back. Pretty awesome if you're in the market.

How do you get 12% cash back?

Wish they had this config but with the Ryzen 6850u processor. The one available now on the Lenovo website has the 500nit Privacy Guard screen that has gotten a lot of bad feedback.

I'd take a brighter glossy screen any day. Even 100% sRGB lacks the contrast of glossy screens.

If you've got a fixed indoor environment, then glossy is fine. But, if you're sitting at the airport and the sun gets into the perfect position (it always does), then you need to find a new place to sit (which often isn't close).

But even glossy screens lack the contrast of OLED screens.
