You want to get a plain wood version that has a knob on the handle. Much more versatile and allows you to deflect or absorb oncoming attacks using one arm. You can also punch with it (without your actual hand hitting the target). As with any self-defense technique or weapon, practice is important as well as understanding the implications of using it on other human beings. You don't want to be the one going to jail because you destroyed an intruder with excessive force.
They come in sets of two, but realistically you will practice using one in your dominant hand (with your other hand open).
