bought these for the usual $362 price last November....

I agree with the Rting review... these are not good for commutes... in the car or on the subway. Smilie on a more serious not, these also don't add anything to the music. What you feed into it is what you'll hear. No unrealistic or colorful highs, mids or bass. (which is a great thing if you're classical music lover and want to hear music as the recording engineers and/or conductors intended)

Make sure you get a decent headphone amplifier to get the most out of these headphones. (can even be something as cheap as $100)

Exactly.

Pair of cans like these require not only a proper amp but a DAC/AMP solution.

Whoever is listening to these straight out of a 3.5mm is doing it wrong even if you just buy a cheap dongle/dac for $100-150
one other thing, the 660 is somewhat tight for my big melon head... after almost using it for a year, it's still tight. Not uncomfortably tight, but still.... not really Sennheiser's fault... I mean, I can't even buy a baseball cap, unless it's from a company that sells 4XL or bigger caps.

How do these compare to the HD 6XX? (which can be had for much less)

If you don't know the Hifiman Sundaras , atleast check them out first, observe the passive soundstage in comparison to the 660s, there's no comparison imo. Get the B stock offer directly from Hifiman for $250 tax free f/s

It is 100% Sennheiser's fault

Some of their models are horrendously uncomfortable

HD58x even after stretch the metal bands carefully with my hands, leaving it on the box, it still is tight

Comparatively my HD560s have a much smaller clamping force

If you dont want clamping force, close this thread and avoid any Sennheiser product because they will have it.

For most clamping force isnt an issue but those with jaw/TMJ issues, headaches, and those that wear glasses are those affected most.

I dont want to dissuade any buyers but like the previous poster people should know what they are getting into from needing a DAC/AMP to recognizing clamping is present

I love the Sundara! Sounded great with just the amount of details I wanted- not overly emphasized. However, I did not have the best experience ordering B stock from Hifiman: not in best shape, and serial number didn't match warranty card. They did not offer to cover return shipping until asked. I'm usually good with buying refurbs/ used, but with Hifiman, I spent the extra $50 and got the new Sundara.

I think this is ymmv. There have been complaints about the clamping force of Sennheiser's particularly the hd58x but this is clearly ymmv.

I have a big face and sensitive ears and have tried the 599,560s,6xx, 600. They all fit fine.

The HD 6XX is higher impedance and therefore harder to drive; said to be equivalent to the HD 650....My personal choice is the HD 600 for the best balanced sound in this Sennheiser lineup.

The HD 660S is often compared to the HD 58X [drop.com] and some believe they share the same lower impedance driver.

Contrary to what others have said in this thread the 660 and 58X are lower impedance and made to use directly with your source, PC, AV, phone etc without additional amplification.

HD 600 aren't nearly as hard to drive as people make it out to be. They sound the same (which is to say neutral, accurate, and bass-light) on a 2022 MacBook Air (which has high impedance support), a 2019 MacBook Pro, and a $10 CX31993 dongle. Volumes are a bit different for comfortable listening (9%, 17%, 27% respectively), so if you like ear damaging loud music, yes you might need a stronger amp. They're high impedance but decently sensitive, which is the more important number.

Everything I've seen says the HD 660S are worse than the 600/650 (I have the 600). 600 is $300 on sale at Amazon right now. 6xx is $280 on Drop, but was on sale for $220 about 2 weeks ago.

I got these for $360ish a little over a month ago from Amazon.

These headphones are open back and not designed for commute. Sennheiser calls these studio reference headphones and target these towards audiophiles.

These headphones have a 160ohm drivers (HD600/650/6XX have a 300ohm drivers), which can technically be powered by a phone, but I won't recommend it. I have used these with a Fiio Q3 MQA dac and a Topping EX-5 dac and these headphones come to life with more power. The Fiio Q3 was barely keeping up. Long story short, these are easier to drive than HD6XX/650/600. But I'd still highly recommend using a dac/amp.

Clamping force is a very real issue on these. But that can be easily fixed by literally bending the metal headbands straight. In my experience, the headband likes to bend back to original shape so I keep bending it straight again. After I stretch these to my liking these are pretty comfortable to wear all day.

It's an awesome deal by the way for anyone who has been waiting to get these.

FWIW, these were 299 for a while earlier this year at Adorama. I chose to wait to pick up a second pair of HD 600 when they recently went on sale at the same price since Sennheiser's consumer division has now been sold.
