"Understanding that it needs a good cumulation of CO in order to trigger the alarm, I placed a clear solid plastic cover on the stove with the device in it. Then I turn on the gas without ignition until I can smell the gas at 10 feet away. It does nothing at all.Do you think we can count on it to save our lives?"
Oh buddy, the gas has to be burning to make CO
A smallish amount of radon in a bedroom downstairs basically causes the same cancers as heavy smoking. And testing is free!

Walmart Review, "I bought this product yesterday. I read the instructions carefully. I made sure the batteries were good. I held it underneath the exhaust pipe of my truck for 5 minutes...AND IT NEVER MADE A SOUND. I would advise anyone who buys any CO detector to test that product in this way before they ever try to use it to protect their lives and the lives of their family members. My situation is unique in that I am in an environment 12 hours a day where CO is present a lot. I need a good detector (that actually works) more than everyone else, and if I hadn't tested this product, I would think, mistakenly, that I was protected, and probably end up dead. Folks, if you're going to trust something to save your life, make sure that the very first thing you do is test it"
As for the expiration, it's probably the same as all others ones, they use an electrochemical sensor that now expires after 10 years, the old ones use to expire after 7 years. It's 10 years from when it's powered on. I did have some carbon monoxide alarms last for 10-12 years because I think at one point the tenants removed the battery so it wasn't powered on for a few years. Very simple to include a counter or timer to determine how long the device has been powered up.

Testing on a smaller engine without catalytic converter, like a snowblower or generator, may be a better idea.

If I can get around the same usage with the newer B&D's I would be happy. It would be nice to have one in the kitchen and another in the bathroom for the occasional quick clean. It would save me the trouble of lugging out the full size vacuum for a very small job at least. Either way, I was glad those B&D vacuums came back in stock as I felt I missed out...
