- NJ: When I did an in-store pickup of an online-order, tax was automatically calculated on (price - TIV_promo - TIV_normal). But when I did an in-store purchasing today, tax was calculated on (price - TIV_promo). According to the representative, this is because TIV_normal is processes as a GC and it has to be applied after the checkout, so the tax is charged on that part. Don't know if this is all true to CA or other states.

- I've done in-store trade-ins a few times at Best Buy. They only do a cursory look at the phone, to make sure it matches the color and condition. They don't care if it is carrier locked or is still being financed. -RonaldM

1. Go to the "Order Details" page for your order on bestbuy.com. This page likely says "Shipping Kit on its way" for the trade in status.
2. Open Developer Console in Chrome. Navigate to the "Networks" tab and reload the page.
3. Search for "trade" in the search box.
4. You should see 3 results - the third begins with "2002..." for me. Click on this one.
5. Click on "tradeInStatusInfo" -> "fulfillment" -> "tracking".
You will see the tracking number of the return shipping UPS label. You should also see a "isBoxShipped" field that likely reflects if your trade-in kit has shipped yet.

An example is that they'll give you $800 for an S21 model phone and that is broken down as a $500 coupon and a $300 gift card. When you buy the new phone the $500 coupon comes right off the price and then you're only taxed on the remainder of the price. You can then use your gift card portion. For a different model phone it may be something like a $400 coupon with a $400 gift card to make up the $800 total trade in.
This seems like the same thing. The trade in values here are a combination of the device value as it's always been, and then a promotional bonus on top. That promo bonus is what comes off the price right away, saving you the tax on that amount. As I understand it the device trade in value is then a gift card balance.
Was expecting full $899+tax refund back but they only gave me $699+tax back cause their systems deducted $200 for the promo gift card - which had been sent to me already.
Did not send in my P6 trade-in yet so this should have been a no brainer.
Arggh on phone now with 1800-BESTBUY speaking to 3rd person now...
