I've been a MasterCard and Visa person all of my life. My cohorts are telling me to upgrade to a discover card or an American Express card. which one is the better choice?

Amex gold is $250? per year but you will get equal value of benefits.

Discover raises my limit, offers lower payments/rates, and lets me choose from a variety of gift cards to use rewards points on. They mail it free to your home. You can also redeem rewards as low as $5 and apply it as a statement credit.
Customer service has always been exceptional with Discover. Amex is the opposite of everything. You have to wait until you reach $25 in rewards with Amex to use it and they don't have GC's. They do offer routine discounts with certain merchants but frankly the interest rate and minimal choices doesn't really make it worthwhile.
You also get a free Shoprunner membership with Amex. Amazon has a partnership with Discover that allows you to use your reward points towards purchases with just a click at checkout.

Next you'll be telling me that there is a Site Issues Sub so folks can post SD issues there instead of the general tech support sub.

Discover is just easier and they aren't like that.

Beyond that though, I get massive value from their cards and their return protection, travel protection, etc etc are great and the travel perks alone usually offset my annual fees. I've had a couple chargeback experiences with them and it was the absolute least amount of pain I've dealt with in those cases from any other provider.
