I have and really like my FireTV Cube (Gen 2).

Keep in mind the Gen 3 just got released, with an HDMI IN/OUT port and some improvements like WIFI 6E etc. We should see the Gen 2 continue to stay pretty well discounted.
The real deal here is to trade in an old FTV device and get a $3 GC plus $24 off (20% off the original price of $120), making this under $40 after tax.

Can someone help with why this over a streaming stick? I have no intention of running Kodi, btw.

I've been wondering same, my 4k stick runs everything I throw at it on Plex. Then again, so does budget Roku Hisense and Tizen. I wouldn't even have a stick were it not for one older TV

Better performance. Marginal improvement over a 4k MAX, significant improvement over the other versions. I found enough improvement over my 4k MAX to order a 2nd one. FWIW, I currently use 4 TVs thru FireTV platforms.
The details vs 4k MAX, 16 vs 8 GB storage, 2.2 vs 1.8 GHz CPU, 800 vs 750 GHz GPU.
Personally I prefer the refurbished as it comes with the older, more intuitively located buttons remote. The first one I just received is packaged as new and looks new, not open or brown box.
Bottom line, guess it depends on how heavy a user you are. FireTV is my exclusive access to local channels (using the now discontinued FireTV Recast DVR) and streaming services. I don't have Cable TV.

I have both the cube and the stick. The cube takes alexa commands such as turn on tv. This is very helpful for my husband - remotes are not his thing). The stick is also very good. For $60, I recommend the cube.

I preordered the gen 3 with the YMMV coupon code that they offered and got it for $99. The upscaling capability has me interested. I think the $59 deal on the 2nd gen is a no brainer for anyone who is interested. It is still very high end.

Thanks for the reminder; I have an old first gen Firestick that I need to get rid of. I was holding on to it hoping to repurpose it eventually. (Perhaps a TinyCamPro webserver or low powered retro game emulation device ECT)

However, given that the 4K sticks are so cheap now and are much more powerful, there's really no need for an obsolete stick IMO; I rather have the 20% off and $3.

How does this compare to the Google tv Chromecast? I have firestick 4k and it's pretty annoying to use. It has a really terrible interface and is slow, and I don't watch much prime content

If you consider the Firestick 4K to be slow and hate the interface, then there is no reason to get this cube. It is marginally faster and has the same interface.

This. If I trade in my old Fire Stick in today, I can get a gen 2 Fire cube for $36.
$120- 20% off coupon= $96- $60 Lightning Deal= $36.

Plus Amazon gives me a $3 Gift card for the old fire stick. YMMV on the trade-in value.
All that being said, I'm still going to wait until tomorrow to see what deals might pop up for Early Access.

I thought the trade in price came off the sale price and not the full price?

If it's a lightning deal (vs. a Sale price) it will stack with the trade-in coupon.

Since the new cubes will be out in 2 weeks, they probably want to dump the stock of these gen 2.
