95% sure you can loan this out from AAP/Oreilly's/Autozone. As long as you bring them back, no charge. Unless you're changing belts often, much better option.

Can you do it without this tool? Probably, it depends on the car and the amount of clearance you have.

But this set can turn a potentially long frustrating job into a quick and enjoyable 5-minute experience.

Then there's all those times that you need to change something that the belt drives.

Is this worth paying extra for over this $19.99 HF one?

That's a pretty limited kit and lacks the ratchet for easier set-up, but if it has the pieces you need for the vehicles you work on, it could get the job done. Gearwrench quality is going to be better, but I'd hope that Harbor Freight quality is good enough for occasional use.

If I was going that route, I think I'd just do it in the parking lot.

Having recently done this job using (or attempting to use) the hf tool, since it is very long, and non ratcheting, I couldn't fully release the tension on my vehicle. Ended up having to use a shorter breaker bar. A ratcheting tool would have worked better for my situation.

I would too, as long as it's driveable..
Would rather loan than take up valuable toolbox space with rarely used tools.

I have the Husky version of this, in addition to an older Craftsman kit that is similar to the HF one. I have had some cars where one worked and the other did not due to clearance issues. You don't need them all that often but I still find it handy to have in my garage. Sometimes you may have some other maintenance to do and it would be easier to take the belt off to get at some bolt whereas the FSM says use a special tool to avoid removing stuff to do the same task. You can do loan a tool if you figure it out before you do the work, but not as easy to do when you are knee deep and then figure it out.

My cars don't even have serpentine belts and the Slickdeals effect is still driving me to want to buy this.

Unless you're a mechanic and need this regularly, slickest deal is to rent this from autozone for the once or twice you need to change your belt in the lifetime of your car.

I have the HF version. But really tempted to get this. The price is great. But this is the kind of tool you use once every few years. Unless you are a mechanic.

The list price is misleading. According to CCC the highest it's ever been is $99 and it normally hangs around the $55 range so this is still a good price, just don't let the inflated list price fool you into thinking this is a 72% discount.

Is this a joke? It is designed for getting into tight clearances, specifically between the bolt ons behind the cooling fan of a car or truck, not a bike.
