With many blade steels it's also important who produced it and how it's been treated — Benchmade consistently excels there too. The CPM-20CV in this offers great edge retention and corrosion resistance for the money, while being a bit less tough and harder to sharpen than, e.g., S35VN. As for the handles/scales, I'm not 100% sure what exactly these are, but when you buy Benchmade you can trust it's going to be more than half decent. You can upgrade them later if you want anyway.

So I choose to pass on any of their products, no matter the deal.
The American companies also leverage a high degree of experience that goes a long way at this level of performance. Experience with things like steel heat treatments, which can take a VERY long time and a lot of money to dial in for example, can make a notable difference in performance with the exact same steel used, so not all M390 or S35VN will perform the same. Experience with things like thoughtful categorical design, ergonomics, and customer service options like fast turn around sharpening and repair are also relevant.
There is a reason they can ask these prices and people pay them.

The old "as long as it's a private business they can do whatever the hell they want" position has rapidly lost supporters.
I've been running with a mini-grip for many years -- and it's still my favorite knife. Own pretty much every EDC knife from Spyderco, Kershaw, and all the cheapies from SanRenMu. And they all have a purpose -- but the mini grip is the one that goes in my pocket when I'm quickly heading out the door.
Looking forward to having a full-size one -- I also like the red color.
Yes, it's true that some people want to force private businesses to cater to them and their beliefs. Those people are called authoritarians, and more often than not they're also hypocrites.
The concerns are by people that are against such actions is this.
Benchmade made an affirmative choice- not required, not part of their knife making business- to destroy firearms. This choice by Benchmade means they picked a side in a culture war issue that was requested by a political party in Oregon that has pursued and passed other laws that one side sees as a 2nd amendment issue.
This, any aid and comfort to a side seen as violating either the letter or SPIRIT of the 2nd amendment is working with an enemy- I am NOT PERSONALLY advocating this, but explaining what those who feel that way believe.
It's likely you will personally disagree which is fine. However, you're likely going to make personal attacks on anyone who believes this, which means the facts are less important than the "sides"- which is what this issue is entirely about. Choosing a side. As for being "authoritarian" for boycotting a company who engaged in conduct you personally disagree with- I suppose the civil rights protestors in Birmingham, Alabama were authoritarianism and the boycott, divest, sanctions of South Africa were authoritarian by that measure.
