The SATA interface is more limited than a direct PCIE interface, like NVME, but it still has a place and is not going anywhere soon.
The underlying NAND flash is not different between a 2.5" SSD or a M.2 2280 form factor, so the cost can not be radically different even though the interface has very large differences. You can save on the controller costs however.
Yeah, I'd rather it be a better drive / brand... but any movement in the right direction is still movement. Many times the budget brands are the first to move and can help move the entire market.
The M.2 statement is a little heavy handed. I have a system that is only 1 year old and has a single M.2 port so I expanded it with a 500GB sata solid state and a 1TB spinning disk. Suites my needs well enough and I didn't have to toss the drive that came with the system.

Well, the laptop that I bought in 2009 currently has a 2.5" SSD, and that is kinda old.

Well soon I will have to move from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 to Windows 11. I expect problems. This could make a cheap backup of my regular backup drive so I can undo.

virtually every modern motherboard made has SATA ports... I think you'd be pretty hard pressed to find a desktop motherboard made in the last 15 years without one.

Yep, as do the very latest and greatest DDR5 based motherboards made this year (yep to the SATA, not to the IDE). This guy apparently didn't realize SATA ports are still a standard interface
