Or is there any way to unlock it sooner, perhaps by having someone with an existing Metro account request an unlock code?
edit: Metro's unlocking policy does not seem to make any provision for their devices being unlocked before 180 days after that device's activation date, but I'm still wondering if they'll automatically work on T-Mobile's network, since that would satisfy my immediate need and save hundreds over T-Mobile's price.

Also:
"$20 activation fee per line may be required"
I got as far in the checkout process as I could without having to enter personal information and didn't see the activation fee added on, but that was just the first step of the checkout process. Perhaps, someone who actually completed the checkout process could confirm if this fee is added to new number online purchases or not.
