Earn up to $80 extra cash back

Activate to earn an extra 4% Cashback Bonus® on up to $2,000 in new purchases from now through December 31, 2022.* This is on top of the standard rewards you earn.

Received in the email, so YMMV. There's no categories involved, so should be straight up 5% cashback for any purchase. When combining with current 5% categories from Discover, should get 9% cb on amazon.com and digital wallet purchase.

Why? I'm a college student and I don't pay fees on their cards. Why is Discover bad?
Other than their 5% categories, which is the only thing I use them for, Discover only pays 0.25% back on the first $3,000 in purchases. Then 1% after that. Most rewards no-annual-fee credit cards pay a minimum of 1% on all purchases, some paying a flat1.5%-2% with occasional bonuses, and some also having a rotating 5% category.

That being said, Discover was my 1st credit card. Discover was the only company that would give me a credit card as a poor college student, so I do appreciate them for that. My daughter now in college could also only get a Discover card (by herself, no co-signers) with no documented income. So they do serve a purpose.

BTW, I tried calling them the other day to get the contactless promo (some people getting $xx for tapping their card a number of times), but got shot down. I asked if I qualified for anything (I'm a very long time customer), and they said no. I was getting a bit irate, and said to give me a reason to use my Discover Card more, or maybe I should just cancel it since I wasn't using it much. They put me on hold, and gave me 3% up to $1500 for a whopping $45.

discover card preyed on all of us back in the college days. we were forced to buy stuff out of super overpriced sears because that was the only place that would accept it.

Call and ask them for the 0% promo rate, you might be surprised they won't hesitate to approve it for you. That's what I did last year after reading the same advice on here.

The link would only activate the original recipient's account. With 4 members in my family, only one got that deal.

Which card pays only .25% back on the first 3000? My Discover It card has 5% back in the categories and 1% back on everything else.

Discover has one of the best customer service and their hold time is always 1-2 min to talk to the rep. The Reps are always US based even after business hours and know what they are doing.

I have a Discover Card from back in the 1990s. Back then, there was only 1 Discover Card, not the many flavors they have now. All the new DC have a 1% min earning rate for all purchases, to be competitive I guess -- I didn't know this. I checked, and my DC does still have 0.25% on the 1st $3000, then 1% afterwards, though I do get the 5% quarterly bonus areas. They said they didn't convert the old cards with the new benefits because some customers might not want to be converted (yea, customers would prefer to only get 0.25% for the first $3000 vs getting 1% for everything...). I called Discover, and they said since May 2022, Discover has 'temporarily' halted card conversions, so I am stuck with 0.25% unless I want to close my account of over 30 years and apply for a new card with the 1%. So they are OK with saddling their longest & most loyal customers with the worst rates and benefits. That's the Discover Card customer service now.

This is BS! Their rotating 5% CB is already worth to have, not to mention they offer extra discount for Amazon purchases occasionally, plus low rate BT. I just had their 0% BT with 2% fee last month and deposited the funds to an CD which earns more than their 2% fee.

Which card?
