Could someone provide some use cases for all those m.2 slots? Every board i've had to date has had at most 2 slots and lots of sata ports. The latter useful for spinner type storage, nas, etc.

I personally have switched over all storage to m2 for speed and cleanliness of build without all of the extra SATA cables

Wish i saw this sooner...
You use this to get a good board, Sell the 12700k on ebay for $300 after fees and then buy a 13600k.
Was hoping i'd be able to do that.

News suggests 13th gen with z690 is very poor performance. I think i saw as little as 1/2 compared to z790

M2 storage isn't popular for NAS because of the current cost (and max size) of storage. Wait a few more years though.

For everything else, M2 is great. Tiny and up to 10x faster than SATA SSD.

I use (3) of my M2 slots. One NVME for the OS/App drive, one NVME for games, and the third is an extra M2 SATA I had lying around. I use the last for general storage. Yes, I could use 1 single M2 for all, but then anyone can use one single SATA SSD or HDD for everything too.

My current NAS runs (4) SATA HDD. I have a SAS card to add up to 8 add'l HDDs when/if needed.

If I ever need even more SATA ports, I'll get a second SAS card.

Thanks for the m.2 comments. I'm a bit old school. Building pc's for a few decades now (not dating myself). In my current box, I have 2 + lots of sata spinners. One m.2 for the OS, other for vm use (vm workstation). I suppose i'll find use for 'em in time on this new board.

Some parts from amz came in today - the thermalright cpu frame and PA120 cooler. The latter was around $43 after tax, $14 for the plate.

Win11 stock performance

C23 - ~23100 points, winrar ~28,000
Temps mostly low 70's.

Prime95 torture test L3 (highest heat) all cores, temps low-mid 70's, one core 77/78C. According to the kill-a-watt meter, the entire board (board, 1 m.2 ssd, 1 sata ssd, logitech wireless keyboard dongle and nothing else) was pulling 270W at the mains! Insane.

Power supply is a evga G+ 650W. At that 270W, PF was .99 (99% efficient).

I'm very impressed with that cooler. $40 and cools as good as some AIO's. Not sure how well it would do long term (30min, 60min, several hours load), but for short term quite well.

Need to read up on OC'ing, maybe bump things up a bit since there's the thermal headroom.

A post in the comments suggests it's a ME issue, linking to a asus forum post. Comments indicate updating ME firmware/driver fixes.

Seems to be going in and out of stock here in chicago (both locations). Earlier today westmont was OOS (not sure about the city, don't want to get shot), now they're showing a few in stock. I'd keep checking.

Sure they want to get rid of old tech, but giving a board for free - even if it's worth ~$150-200 (on ebay) is a pretty good deal. Wonder what their criteria is for choosing which boards to bundle. I think to date this is the most featureful board in such a bundle.
Dude westmont is fine. The area where the store is nice. Well technically I moved away some years ago…but I don't think they ruined the burbs that far out yet.

I'm saying I rather to drive twice as far to westmont than possible get shot in the city.

@Nattefrost, can't answer that. I haven't played a video game in many years. Research what the power requirements are of that card. The fact the cpu + board under full load takes upwards of 300 watts is telling to say the least.

Sorry, but that doesn't sound like good advice for anyone. Why would I drop a $400 processor (at MC, but I did see it is $329 at a few places) into a motherboard that dates back to 2018 (X470) when I can get a spiffy new 2021 board and CPU for $350 and then sell my 3700X/X470 for ~$200? Also, according to my trusted source, the 12700K is significantly (~20%) faster across the board in real world apps. I don't go by just games.
I later read your use case isn't gaming so yeah getting a 5800X3D isn't too helpful. I stand by the 2nd part of my statement. Wait for the 13 series to hit a price point you are happy with. Both intel 12 and 13 series perform significantly better with DDR5 memory. This motherboard is capped at DDR4. Also, 13th gen Intel supports higher memory clocks on DDR5 and thus is faster in productivity tasks.

This board is limited to DDR4 RAM. I'd get a better one that takes DDR5 if I'm going to get it to pair with a 13600K.

Yup... And then you enter the rabbit hole of the ever increasing costs to build the system. All depends on your use case, needs, wants.

I had 4 16GB 3600 mhz ddr4 modules collecting dust in one system (one that would work just fine with 32gb). So 32gb there and 32gb here.

I think for most non gaming and non content creation uses - most of today's cpu's are overkill. For the latter of course you want top shelf cpu's, ram, storage.

This is normal. Some motherboards want you to install in the A2-B2 slots (usually the 2nd and 4th slots - which matches with the grey slots in this board) if only using 2 RAM sticks (and it won't work if you install in A1-B1 slots). However, when using all 4 slots with 4 sticks of RAM, it works fine. This is because the some boards brands (Asus and Gigabyte most commonly) use daisy chain memory topology so the slots you use for the 2 ram set-ups can alter performance. Usually, when the brand does this, they will color code the ram slots.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3...W1AE&t=54s

It's not some mb's, it's about ALL motherboards with 4 slots use the "second" pair of slots as the primary, as counted from the cpu side of the memory. RTM.

I believe the reviewers and testers showed that it was only a 2-3% improvement with DDR5. Also, I don't have any DDR5 and I'm not looking to spend another $90-$130 for a set of sticks. The net gain I'll be getting with the Board/CPU upgrade is well worth the cost (which will be be a net of maybe $200 after I sell my 3700X and X470 board).
