AMD's AM5 price just laughable...
FYI. AMD is selling 5800x3D + Uncharted game at their own website for $329: https://www.amd.com/en/direct-buy/us
Grab a decent B550 for about $100 and cheap DDR4 instant saving $250 over this clown.

What's the price/performance ratios on DDR4 v. DDR5?
Is the reason that fast DDR4 is better than average DDR5? or is DDR5 still too expensive?

I have a 7900x, ddr5, 4090 and I honestly cant tell if its any faster. (in daily use with moderate to high loads) Obviously mine is faster, when testing the CPU only, (in games) the difference isn't that noticeable. (only specific titles) Video processing is about 30% faster with the DDR5/7900 vs 13600k/3600 ddr4

1. Consensus is depend on your platform and mobo. Like you can't install a D4 on Zen 4. and if you have D4 at hands you might as well choose D4 mobo for a little cheaper price and overall matching low end D5 performance.
2. D5 is both good and priced reasonably right now. The good is because most recent AAA games and Apps does utilize much bandwidth over latency. Reviews like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I...eVA&t=496s shows the proof. 16G DDR5 4800CL40 cost $80 while 16G DDR4 3200CL14 cost $75
3. You still gonna see counter proof of exotic D4 still good in competitive games, but problem is when you considering buying those D4 4000 CL16 or D4 3600 CL14 b-die. they're somewhat more expensive than med tier D5.
4. DDR5 are well good overclocker, especially if your D5 is using Hynix chip, every single one of them can overclock to at least 6600@CL32 w/o any problem. And B660 do support t XMP and memory oc this time. On the other hand D4 is pretty much pushed to limits when you bought them, every single b-die has been made to exotic pairs which cost way more than cheap D4 sticks. So an example is:
if you pay $140 for 32G D4 3600@CL16 the best it might do is 3800@CL16. While you pay $150 for 32G D5 5200@CL36 it can easily oc to 6600@CL32 which improves a lot and matching top of the line D5 performance. To compete with it, you might need to spend $250 for b-die D4 to oc to 4000@CL16 to match, but you already see the irony here.
So all in all, if you're build a brand new PC with nothing at hands, you might be better consider D5 for they're fair priced now and potential to use for next 4-8 years to come. However if you have a exist system and D4 at hands, especially those are exotic D4 memory, you'd better stick to it for a little longer.

The 5800X3D is great for gaming. My 1% lows in heavy multiplayer populated maps is helped a ton with the cache

Wow, definitely gonna have to do some more research. The OC on DDR5 reminds me of the old days, i can't believe it OCs so well.
I've never heard of CL32 or CL40, does the insane data rate of DDR5 more than make up for the latency?

Fair comparison, unlike most people will just outright bashing am5. I just retired my 6700k with 8gb 2133 ddr4. So I am building from scratch, I have tried a lot of calculation, piecing together am4 or intel 13k, $300 cpu + $150 mobo + $110 32gb cl16 3600. As you can see, it totals to $560 + tax; where I just grab the am5 micro center deal for $400 cpu + $300 mobo + free memory. I paid $140 more but I will be able to drop in a brand new cpu when am5 mobo is end of life, instead of scraping everything, or sell everything at 50% loss, then buying a new DDR5 platform at that time. I feel like its just a matter of whether we pay for the platform cost now or later.
I do think 13600k performs better than 7700x and the memory set from micro center is not the best. But I have watch numerous benchmark from hardware unbox, GN, LTT, etc. I ran some of the same test such as r20, r23, god of war, horizon, and my results stay within 5% of their result. I am not sure how much differences ddr5-6000 memory would make if you are doing productive task on a daily basis, but it is not noticeable in my use case, which is gaming in AAA titles at 1440p. If you plan to upgrade in around 3, 4 years, am5 is worth considering if you have a micro center around.

What am I missing? $40 more than the 12700k to have a cross between the 5800x3d and the 12700k?
I only came up with about $100 difference this deal with RAM vs a $100 motherboard with the x3d.. I'd suggest a beafier $125 option though or refurb.
You always pay more for the latest and greatest and this is solid for a fresh release.
It seems core for core that AMD and Intel have somewhat switched positions, I remember when Intel fanboys mocked AMD even though it won in multi thread.

AM5 is a solid release. Mobos and ddr5 is $. You can say the same for Z970 that costs even more. There's a lot of trolls and Intel fanboys brigading r/AMD and because of youtubers pushing a narrative. If someone is building brand new, I'd skip the 5800X3D and go straight for AM5. RL is EOL so that's a no for me.
Imagine the the fanboys who bought a 7600k instead of a 1600 back in 2017. Hahaha I can upgrade to a 5800x3d with the same board. Can't say the same for 1151 owners. 🤣
Is it going to get a point where computer speed is basically instant in any task, and any amplification of computing power is going to be to the human operator unnoticeable?

No. The more computing resources, the more they will get eaten up by ever growing stack of abstractions

This is the currently best all around performance budget build.
Kiddo has a 13600k, 3090, 750w supply and its a monster.
13th gen Intel is quite a bit slower than AM5 with DDR4, though. In previous gen, AMD was dependent on RAM speeds and latency. That's flipped this gen. AMD has a much better cache situation this gen. 13th gen is faster with top end DDR5, but is highly dependent on RAM speeds. The 5800x3D is a good bit faster than 13th gen running DDR4, and a good bit cheaper. Sure AM4 is now a dead platform, but you'd have to replace your motherboard when you upgrade with Intel if you want to take advantage of performance increase anyways, if you buy a DDR4 mobo now. 5800x3d if you want nearly the same gaming performance as AM5 or 13th gen if you're on a budget, or either AM5 or 13th gen with DDR5 of you care more about upgradability and can afford it.

The recent Hardware Unboxed review compared the 7600X, 5800X3D, 5600X, 13600K, and 12600K using best memory, budget memory, and the funny thing was that they all had very similar performance, but the "cost per frame" of Intel was higher than AMD, with the 5600X being the best overall value.
That said, I've got a 7700X and ASRock X670E from that microcenter deal with the free RAM and it's amazing 😍
