SWA has announced that, starting in 2023, Southwest is raising the qualifying benchmark for the Companion Pass from achieving 125,000 qualifying points to 135,000 qualifying points in the same calendar year.

You can earn it through credit card spend points, but you can also earn it through other ways such as referral points for referring people to get the card and/or spending through the spending portal or spend partners. In years past, I have gotten the companion pass pretty early in the calendar year with one card's large bonus + referral points from a few people who signed up.

If you are targeting the companion pass, get the card now, but remember not to complete the full initial spend of $3,000 until late December 2022 or Jan 2023 -- and after your December billing statement closes (but still before the 3 month window from when you were approved). This is so you get the bonus in 2023. Then do other things in 2023 to get to 135,000 qualifying points, and you will have a companion pass for the rest of 2023 and all of 2024.
Yes! The best plan is the qualify to earn the companion pass in early 2023 and the CP goes the rest of the year and all of 2024!
Yes, but you should make sure both bonuses hit in early 2023 (instead of one bonus hitting in late 2022 and one hitting in early 2023)...Track your spending.

I opened a card last year and my 1 year comes up tomorrow. Is it worth it for me to cancel today and not get charged annual fee and be able to possibly do this deal next year or did I wait too long to cancel?
My advice...

Cancel the card asap

Wait a year until the next bigger-bonus deal comes up (but it will need to be 24 months after you received the bonus on that prior card--not just 24 months from opening), and you will be ready for it.

In the meantime, get the Chase Sapphire Preferred and earn some convertible SWA points on that in the meantime (and hopefully a nice bonus too for that new card).

This is really helpful, thank you! I did not realize the 24 months was based on when you got bonus, not when you open card. I just called to cancel and they said if I stayed they would waive the annual fee so I figured I'd stay and get the $75 credit and annual points and then can cancel later. Thanks so much!

Yes...good move keeping it then.

Because of that, you might also just keep it until mid year or the fall.

And it's probably best if you cancel it 31 days before being eligible to re-apply for another bonus.

My understanding is that the annual fee does not count towards the spend.

I think I royally farked up and spent 3k before my December statement. I am at 3154. That includes the 149 card fee! I had a pending $20 item from amazon so I am trying to cancel that. Doubt that will help. I think I messed up big time. Too much big Christmas spending. Anything I can do?

Will it matter? You still need 135k point right.

Edit: when is your statement closing? Get it delivered and return it. Annual charges is not included for the 3k spend

Yeah. I have personal and business card and spent to much on my personal card. So I need both points offers to get the 135k. Looks like my statement may close tomorrow. My business statement has already come so it is good.

I returned an item to Walmart and purchased it back on another card. The refund is already showing in my pending transactions. So it looks like I should be good!

Word of warning to anyone who is tracking spending towards your bonuses on these SWA cards, returns still count towards minimum spend. Meaning, anything you buy regardless if it is returned or canceled right away it will count towards the total if it hits the card at some point. I'm currently in the process of getting screwed out of buddy pass because I made a purchase for a fridge, the order had to be modified so was canceled, then re ordered. The card shows the refund as actually hitting before the charge was even made but it pushed me over the 3k spend limit. Again, this was never reflected on the actual balance. Went from pending to refund then the actual charge showed the next day but it pushed over the 3k spend. So, whatever you buy regardless of it's canceled or not will count towards the spend. This could be taken advantage of as well if you don't wanna spend honestly, according to everything the agents have been saying you could just buy $3k worth of whatever, cancel or return it and you've met the spend. It's crazy, frustrating and cost me big.

Did you talk to chase and see what they say?

Edit: spoke to chase on this and they mentioned it takes 6-8 weeks for the points to be credited to SW account. This will be definitely after January. Do you still see an issue?

It's never taken more than a day or two to hit my SWA account after the closing date, I know it says that 6-8 weeks. I opened the account last month, there was a short cycle that had just a few days where I spent a few hundred. It closed 11/21, points were in my SWA account 11/22. If you read around online it's the general consensus, never more than a few days.

So for me even though I didn't actually spend $3k my bonus tracker on the chase app shows complete and the pending points that will be transferred at the end of the statement includes the bonus. I'm trying to get them to change the closing date to push out till January but I've been told they can only do it for a future statement not a current. So anyone close to the bonus be careful with any returns, everything counts.

Or like I said if I had to do it again I'd not spend a penny on the card, wait till I'm in the statement that closes in January and I'd purchase $3k of anything and return it right away. Bonus met, nothing spent. I ran this by multiple agents saying how ridiculous it is but they confirmed its how their system works.

That's correct. They mentioned it's 15-30 days for regular statements and 6-8 weeks for bonus points. That's what both southwest and chase mentioned

Wonder if I can do this to manufacture some spending. Buy something expensive, collect bonus, return item.
