No, not sucks. Nobody can see the future. As long as those who bought last month for $100 more keep playing their gutiars. The cost difference, amortized over 10, 20, 30 years is nothing.

I bought one of these last time they went on sale for this price from Adorama and it showed up with a dead pickup. It was covered under the fender warranty although it took 60 days for Fender to send the new pickup.

Yeah I have been shopping for a player/player plus for a few months... having seen anything new this cheap, and yep the used ones I have seen are around this price or a bit more (but I feel like might be able to get one for less OBO)

To add to what mtcameraguy said, you will want that polar white one if you're interested in playing rock or metal as it has a humbucker pickup that would allow to you achieve that tone better than this guitar, which only has single coil pickups.

That one has HSS while this one has SSS. You can check Youtube vidoes on sound differences. The H(umbucker) will sound thicker/muddier than the S(ingle coil); but H'll have less noise than S so you can up the gain more. Traditional strat is SSS. I'd get the SSS unless you know you want the HSS (then again, some people think HSS is more flexible, i.e. more sound options). Am I making it more difficult for you to pick or easier? hahaha. Either way, I think you'll be OK.
