The non X version is $119 as a better buy
The 5600 (non X) is a good bet.

Thee are so many variants with CPUs it gets dizzying if you've been out of the game for a while. I'm looking to build a new middling PC with a spare RTX 2060 I have and I feel lost on which CPU I should go with.

Ha! Tell me about it! My last build was in 2011 with the 2500k and GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3 which cost more than most of the combo options I'm seeing now. I've tried to keep up on what's what but the vast amount of options in almost every tech product these days is dizzying. My plasmas are about ready to be replaced and I'm stressing that upgrade as well. LMAO

5600 is for majority of people; intels lineup is worse with 12xxx and 13xxx being ok but they have so many skus for overclock(k) and no igpu(f)

the x for amd is binned higher i believe they just some skus without a fan since most want to put their own cooling anyways to prevent collecting tons of wraith fans

Yeah, I've been reading aeticles and watching reviews and I've settled on the amd ryzen 5600 or the intel i5-12400. I live near a microcenter so it will depend on stock and price. Bith seems to be pretty close in terms of performance. Man tho, so many different models and variants out there it gets confusing and overwhelming if you're not in tune like I used to be.

the cost of entry is the big deal; which motherboard and knowing that am4 will have limited upgrade path is the big deal to consider; lga socket will continue to change so you at least get 2 generations from intel but you will only upgrade to 5800x3d from am4 and be lower than 10 cores

Why do you think bin is impractical and silicon lottery is valid? It's all probability due to how these products function of such a small level that theres just variance in the product stack; even myths have lessons to teach when it comes to what to determine as being suitable for your money; silicon lottery is just another way of saying, "it is what it is" which is a poor cop out on what you end up when you break the seal and actually overclock

theres a tolerance level to everything electronic and i think the "x" variant for AMD at least is when theres just a better yield from fabrication instead of poor fabrication trials so they have to reduce the price from those "cut from a lower quality cloth"

It wont affect majority of people since we arent the .01% that is doing extreme overclock to actually make use of the silicon IPC and clock speeds; all in all my 5ghz OC is much different from yours since we do totally different workloads and leisure

My two years old Ryzen 5 3600 died on me... out of the blue, no signs, not OC-ed!
Went to Best Buy and got what they had in stock: this 5600X for $159...

I settled on the 5600 purely from a price perspective with the motherboard. I don't think you can go wrong with either, so I made the deciding factor of cost.

The 5600G is PCIE 3.0, and the 5600X supports PCIE 4.0 with the right motherboard.

I went with an X for gaming, and faster m2 slot.
