Wondering if this too large to fall within the 62' requirement for checked bags on most airlines ?

I haven't traveled in a while so am not sure how strict airlines are nowadays. Thinking about getting this as a gift

That is a valid concern. We have the Samsonite Omni PC model (great set so far) and while we do have the full 3 piece set (20, 24 & 28) we have only used the 20 & 24 piece one's so far on flights because of the airlines 62" linear limit. While we have seen these 28" giants at the airport, I don't want to be the one standing at the counter when the airline tells me I have to pay the oversize luggage fee (which can be significant).

This 28 inch model clocks in at 63.7 inches. I think our model (the Omni PC) comes in at just a shade over 64 inches.

We will use the bigger ones for retirement road trips and cruises that we can drive to (vice fly).

Will also add that the weak point on these clam shell type suitcases is the zipper so luggage straps are recommended. We used these on our checked baggage and they were great.

They were $15.19 when we bought them a few months ago. I like these because it is a two piece set. They are looped together. And they come with an additional TSA Lock.

We also used these on our 20" carry-ons.

How much are you packing that you need luggage straps to keep it together?

It's not so much the weight as the treatment the luggage handlers can give them. Guess you could always travel with a roll of duct tape in case you have a failure mid trip. And hope you don't loose anything inside where ever the failure occurs (loading/unloading at the airport or airplane). The straps are just an extra measure of insurance and they are pretty affordable.

Not sure if this will have any reach but I ended up visiting Ross because of the comment that these were cheaper in store.

I found 6-7 different models at $99 for the 28 inch suitcase. All are Samsonite. From a thread that I found they don't use the official names at Ross but they are the exact same bags.

Walked out with a 28 inch for under a hundred bucks. Not bad.
