If I can make a suggestion...I just purchased Ankbit E600Pro headphones for a little under the price of the Sony headphones. I'm not a shill, but they do a lot more for less:
Wired AUX and wireless codecs AAC; aptX; aptX Low Latency; aptX HD, ANC (includes transparency mode)...but don't take my word for it.

It is never leather
I bought the same headphone from Kohl's for a couple of reasons last week
(1) Kohl's always has $10 free kohls cash if you spend over $50.
(2) Kohl's has longer return window....I think 6 months.
(3) I can also earn Kohl's rewards for this purchase, may be $2-3?
(4) I can also earn Kohl's cash back from other third party cash back web sites. If you google "Kohls cash back", you can find tons of web sites offer 4% cash back or you can earn airlines miles....etc. You never can earn cash back from Amazon purchase.

How do these compare to the gold standard of budget ANC phones, the Anker 20/30 series?

According to rtings not much of a difference:

The 910n (next model up) are leather (vs Leatherette). Sony has tight price control, so these are usually in the $130-150 Range. Last year they were on BF for about the same price, after BF they returned to the $130-150 range for most of the year.

I saw these in an early BF add for Target, and I think everyone price matched or Sony dropped the price for the holiday.

How do these compare to the XM4s?

I had these and switched for XM3's. Slightly less comfortable, sound is solid but slightly less quality, bass. Biggest difference is the noise cancelling. But for the price, it was a fantastic set. I unfortunately have a dumbo ear on my left that was hitting the speaker and made it uncomfortable. The XM3's haven't been an issue in that dept.

I know right and I just hate that. I'd pay an extra 10-15 bucks for some real leather. Does it increase the retail price that much by adding real leather? Like... geez

Real leather for the ear cups? I don't know, imo there are better things to make leather, I'll keep the synthetic stuff against my ears and sweat

In fairness, I've never owned the AKG Y600NC and I've only owned the Ankbit E600Pro for a short period of time. I've been enjoying the Ankbit, but I will tell you the spec differences:

AKG Y600NC: USB-C charging. 25 hrs with Bluetooth & ANC on. Up to 35 hrs BT on & ANC off. A 10 minute charge will give you 4 hours, otherwise it needs to be charged for 2 hours. Codecs: UHQ, AAC, SBC. 40mm drivers. Bluetooth 5.0.

Ankbit E600Pro: USB-C charging. 45 hours with BT & ANC. 80 hours in BT on & ANC off.
A 5 minute charge will give you 5 hours, otherwise it needs to be charged for 2 hours.
Codecs: aptX HD, aptX LL, aptX, AAC, SBC. 40mm drivers. Bluetooth 5.1.
Multi-Point Connection. NFC. AUX cable. Supposedly, you can still use the headphones without a charged battery if you use the AUX cable but I haven't tried that yet. Also, supposedly, you can still use ANC with the AUX cable (as long as the headphones are charged) but I haven't tried that either

Your choice is really dependent on what smartphone you're using. If you have an iPhone, either of them should be good because they both support AAC. If you have a modern Samsung phone, the AKG might be a better choice because they support Samsung's UHQ codec (assuming your phone supports that as well). If you have a different brand of Android phone, the Ankbit might be a better choice because they support aptX and aptX HD (which is widely supported on most modern Android phones including Samsung). Hope this helps.

Update: I just tried the USB-C to AUX cable. Yes, the headphones still work in wired mode without turning on the power button, but you do need to turn them on if you want to use ANC.

Great suggestion. I was about to jump on the E600pro and saw that the E700 is only $20 more right now and ended up jumping on that: https://a.co/d/70myn2X
Thanks for the recommendation.
