Note--If you are getting a Paperwhite anyway, consider this model over the regular. It comes with a cover, can be adjusted to an adult account and reportedly has no ads.
What makes this a SD is the 20% trade-in discount works on this. It does not work on the new 16GB model, which is ten bucks more.

105 for this with cover beats 85 for the basic Kindle with no cover, by a lot. 105 for this with cover beats the 95 basic PPW by some (with the basic PPW the cover is 20, ad removal is 20). With 20% trade discount for this, this is about 80 bucks for the PPW and cover package.
On start it runs you through creating a Kids account. I did, then changed to the basic adult account, then deleted the Kids account from there. It is now a Paperwhite.
On the computer I went to My Services and cancelled the K+ one year promo. I still have a year of it to look at it to see what it is. Maybe there are some free classic books there.
It came with v.14 firmware. I wondered whether it would update to the current v.15 firmware (which shows epub book covers), because the Amazon page does not list the Kids edition to upgrade. It upgraded to v.15 overnight. I sent an epub book to it and there it is, with the cover.
There are no ads. The lockscreen shows the cover of what you are reading.
Signature Edition is a better device because of its light sensor (more GB does not matter for ebooks--Keep your libaray on an old phone's SD card if you want to archive). But it is 130, which with a cover and ad removal would be 170 to be apples to apples.
Small note--the browser remains broken. My K3 and K Touch browsers properly format text, and even do proper reflow. My 2015 PPW with the current firmware renders all text too small in the browser, in either Web or Article modes. For whatever reason the current PPW still renders text too small in Web mode, but Article Mode works ok (if you are ok with text render like a preschool book). Look for text-only sites.
