It has been at this price often. This one has no 2.5Gbps port and is a lower model of RT-AX86U.

Also 512 MB RAM for the 86S model vs 1GB for the 86U model. May be an issue if you like to flash alternate firmware. Seems like this could impact performance but this is supposition only.

Most won't notice a difference between using the u vs s model. This device is just a router, and unless you're running 30+ devices simultaneously, VPN, and QoS, then a higher processor/ram isn't going to be noticeable. Also, unless a device is physically connected to the 2.5G port that is gig+, that's moot point.

Has anyone tried this? I tried their last trade in with security cam and the coupon was only available for their totaltech members, which isn't free. They don't tell you until the coupon is printed.

Fast ping and DNS resolve times. You can use LAN 1 for your gaming rig and then activate the gaming feature and it will prioritize LAN 1 over other traffic. It also offers some gaming VPN feature to speed network traffic for online gaming.

That said, if you change your DNS server on your existing router to Cloudflare (1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1) you will already reduce DNS query resolve times (and cut the ISP from logging you and selling that data to advertisers).

It makes it easier for people than having to install custom firmware and DD-WRT and try to optimize their network traffic themselves.

Usually stupid lights and a magic button that makes popular game network traffic a few milliseconds faster.

And probably an extra sticker and an additional $50. ;-) I think the gaming version has a bit more red plastic.

I posted earlier in this thread that I tried it and was denied. I was told the 15% off isn't available on routers that are on sale.

How can a router with only 3 horns cost $180? That's $60 per horn!
There is another horn under the hood!

I think so. Parental controls usually work by changing the DNS settings and there are plenty of options in there, e.g. add blocker, adult content etc. Separate 2.4, 5 and guest for sure. You can also combine 2.4-5 fora seamless experience. I have Merlin running since day one but that feature set is usually stock+ with more options. You can select static DNS and and MAC address approvals so you don't want a device on the network you can block it.
https://github.com/RMerl/asuswrt-merlin.ng/wiki

You can also simply pick Quad 9 as DNS filter to filter malware and other content. Essentially, every router can do that if you change the DNS to your liking:

Cloudflare is the fastest if you want speed but I like Quad 9 as well. They also don't keep any logs.
Thanks a lot and this info is definitely very useful for me.

Do high numbers usually mean better router? I have TP link AX4400 and linksys AX5400 and compared each other and seemed like TP link was better.

Wondering if asus routers will work better. (Coverage and handling multiple devices)
TP link AX4400 seems to be okay for now but could be better and I want to future proof it for more devices and usage.

Asus provides 4-5 years of firmware updates for their routers. Most other company consumer routers get ~2 from what I have seen.

No, you cannot go solely by that as there are lots of tricks manufacturers can play to inflate those numbers. You should look at the number of streams a router can support at each frequency. For instance, a 3x3 setup should be able to outperform a 2x2 -- but you can play with stuff so a 2x2 could have higher numbers (that the user really won't ever see unless the client is right next to the router).
