It has been at this price often. This one has no 2.5Gbps port and is a lower model of RT-AX86U.

Also 512 MB RAM for the 86S model vs 1GB for the 86U model. May be an issue if you like to flash alternate firmware. Seems like this could impact performance but this is supposition only.

How many LAN Ethernet ports?
Bestbuy says "Eight Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports". But I see only 4.
4 ports, 1 dedicated "gaming port"

Can this be wall mounted? Say behind a TV?
There are no holes for wall mounting on the router. My older router had it. I hung it behind my tv using ethernet cables and zip ties.

Old fart dummy question: replacing an old wifi 5 router with this. Ethernet cables from cable modem to router, and router to desktop are Cat5. Should I upgrade to Cat6 to get full wifi cabability with the Asus?
Cat5e is fine for short runs. Just as fast as Cat6. It's when you start running patch cables over 75' I believe, that you need to start thinking about Cat6. I'm running a 50' Cat5e patch cable to another router and no problems.

Bought one at store with 15% off trade-in which is a decade old AT&T "DSL" modem/router came freely with service. To process trade-in, I was referred to customer service where I completed the purchase as well.

Best Buy in Bklyn - no one has heard of the trade in, and they were all very confused when I showed them the website on my phone. Finally the manager said let's just "try it" - I think he just applied a 15% discount on the purchase and took the old router as recycle, since the receipt just shows a discount of $27.

In any case, it was easy enough once the manager came in and $153 plus taxes - good deal

Just bought the router yesterday at Best Buy in West Los Angeles and they accepted my old router for the discount. Had to go to customer service first.

One question I have. I have Spectrum internet 400Mbps plan. Yesteday night after I installed the router on the first floor, I went to Speed test and it was showing I was getting consistent speeds over 400 Mbps. It even produced those speeds when I was on the second floor. This morning I ran it and now I'm getting 150 Mbps. Right now I'm the only one using it in my household. Does Spectrum cap speeds?

My provider is also Spectrum (was Charter). I am in los angeles area.
My speedtest results from the router itself was 371.95/11.49 last night (21:01)
It's 371.57/10.95 this morning (08:09).
I heard that cable networks share bandwidth with neighbors long ago. Don't know if it's still true today.

Bought one to mess with. Ended up grabbing it for 148 + tax. (dead router trade in).

PS: The dual core vs quad core/ram doesn't really matter for a majority of people. The main CPU/RAM only typically matters if you're enabling every possible feature on the router itself.. QoS, VPN, monitoring, AI protection etc..

Radio performance is identical outside of tolerance range. They're FCC certified with the same power output.

The only major advantage AX86U has is its 2.5G port for 1GB+ ISP and File transferring.

Edit: Subjectively this model performs better (for me) over the newer gen 2 platform GT-AX6000 I also bought to mess with last month.

Firmware is more refined, radios perform like triband variants now. (GT-AX11000/GT-AXE11000).

They didn't on AX86U @ release...

IMO in terms of value...

GT-AC2900 for 90-110 USD
AX86S for 150-180 USD on sale.
AX86U @ 220 USD (Makes sense if price difference between AX86S is big enough.. if you need 2.5G port, by all means).

These are the best 4x4 5G options that perform and punch well into price class vs competition.
Good summary. I'm currently running this wired up to my xfinity x1 wifi router (put in bridge mode) as the wifi performance of the xfinity unit is not great. I'm getting full ~9xx download speeds from my 1gig xfinity service on compatible devices, and the stable working range is maybe 20-30 feet longer which was exactly what I needed.

I haven't had it for long but you can defeat the leds and it's been 100% stable for me, and the range boost is good enough I don't need to mess with a mesh system, which was what I was leaning towards.

I can see the missing 2.5g port as being a critical feature for some. That's the main reason this unit is cheaper.

Thanks for the reply! I don't know what happened but I just tested it now at 8:30 and it's back to 400 Mbps. Not sure how that happened.

How is this single unit better than those mesh systems with 2 bases?

Most of them have sneaky wording like "up to 400Mbps", because it will absolutely vary with traffic in your area. Slower speeds in the start of the day and early evening are a big sign of this being the issue. At least you know your line and hardware are capable of it.

My initial xfinity setup was never going above 50% of the plan speed and it was hell to get them to fix it.

I understand now. Thanks for this info. Guess I should expect different speeds.
