It has been at this price often. This one has no 2.5Gbps port and is a lower model of RT-AX86U.
Also 512 MB RAM for the 86S model vs 1GB for the 86U model. May be an issue if you like to flash alternate firmware. Seems like this could impact performance but this is supposition only.

How is this single unit better than those mesh systems with 2 bases?

Just bought the router yesterday at Best Buy in West Los Angeles and they accepted my old router for the discount. Had to go to customer service first.

One question I have. I have Spectrum internet 400Mbps plan. Yesteday night after I installed the router on the first floor, I went to Speed test and it was showing I was getting consistent speeds over 400 Mbps. It even produced those speeds when I was on the second floor. This morning I ran it and now I'm getting 150 Mbps. Right now I'm the only one using it in my household. Does Spectrum cap speeds?
Most of them have sneaky wording like "up to 400Mbps", because it will absolutely vary with traffic in your area. Slower speeds in the start of the day and early evening are a big sign of this being the issue. At least you know your line and hardware are capable of it.

My initial xfinity setup was never going above 50% of the plan speed and it was hell to get them to fix it.

I understand now. Thanks for this info. Guess I should expect different speeds.

It could also be local interference from neighbors.

There's a router based speed test in the QoS tab via ASUS GUI to make sure its not your connection.

Good summary. I'm currently running this wired up to my xfinity x1 wifi router (put in bridge mode) as the wifi performance of the xfinity unit is not great. I'm getting full ~9xx download speeds from my 1gig xfinity service on compatible devices, and the stable working range is maybe 20-30 feet longer which was exactly what I needed.

I haven't had it for long but you can defeat the leds and it's been 100% stable for me, and the range boost is good enough I don't need to mess with a mesh system, which was what I was leaning towards.

I can see the missing 2.5g port as being a critical feature for some. That's the main reason this unit is cheaper.
Yes the 2.5G port is the only real world advantage if you don't mess with the CPU sided stuff.

Number of client connections are 100% biased to the radio CPU (A7 @1.5ghz), though if you end up using SW layers, the quad core and ram will provide more oomph.

The dual core A53 in this router is stronger than the cheaper A7 based Quad core and Tri core models that use 2x2 SoCs.

Broadcom/WIFI brand marketing just sucks when it comes to presenting the correct info.

I tried to do the router trade-in to get an additional 15% off but was denied. Anyone been able to get that additional discount on a router that's on sale at Best Buy?
It's legit I got the 15% off. I did get the run around up front, then went to the PC sales counter and acted like they told me to come there for the 15% off and they gave it.

The AX86U Pro is due to be released soon but I don't know exactly when it will be.

the employee at the resister didn't know how to handle the recycle promo so I went to the service desk and the employee there took care of it without any issues. I was surprised how quick the process was. it took about 5-10 minutes from walking in the store, finding the router (last one), then checking out. somehow there were no lines, which I was quite surprised. I was expecting to wait in line for awhile

Been running the hacked T-mobile ASUS for years… now it's MESH for AX86S running flawless.

I got this router and it shows 90% usage for RAM, my ASUS ROG Strix AX3000 GS-AX3000 router shows 57% ram usage. Both have 512 mb. Is the higher ram usage bad? What's everyone else's ram usage from the Asus app?

Did you update the AX86S main router to merlin firmware as well?

It's how Linux handles the memory and reallocates it on the Asus, causing it to appear maxed out.

Thanks. I'm not too familiar with how Linux handles ram. I bought the same router from Amazon to test with. It also maxed ram to 88%. I ran tests on both routers and even without devices attached it was around 77%. Configuring/enabling a few services and it's close to 90% for both so it looks like that's standard with this router. I'm surprised no one else who bought this mentions RAM usage. This is the same whether I use Merlin or Asus firmware.

I also bought the ASUS ROG Strix AX3000, a lesser router compared to this one and the RAM max was around 55% so to me it makes no sense. Same features but less ram usage. Why is that?
